(12-29-09) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's basketball fell 53-70 Tuesday night to the C.W. Post Pioneers at Charger Gymnasium. With the loss the Chargers fall to 7-4 on the season, while the Pioneers improve to 7-3.
The Pioneers jumped out to an early lead at Charger Gymnasium. After nearly 10 minutes, C.W. Post led 22-11. The Pioneers continued to lead throughout the remainder of the first half, including a 13-point, 31-18, lead at the 3:00 mark. New Haven trailed 24-33 at halftime.
The Pioneers would continue to strengthen their lead as the second half developed. Nicole Pollard helped cut the C.W. Post lead to 33-40 at the 14:11 mark with a layup and extra free throw. The Pioneers then started a 16-0 run to take a commanding 23-point, 56-33, lead with 10:54 left. UNH cut the lead to 16 points in the final minutes, but C.W. Post held on for the 70-53 victory.
The Chargers struggled shooting the ball Tuesday night, connecting on just 33.3 percent of their shots and just 6.7 percent of their three-pointers. The Pioneers hit 47.4 percent of their shots, while tabbing a 35.0 percent from long range.
Leading the statistics for New Haven was Olivia DeMarco with 14 points on 6-of-14 shooting. Jill Baranger added 13 points, while Yasmin Itheir-Vicenty grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
