(09-23-09) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's volleyball team defeated Pace University 3-0 (25-12, 25-9, 25-18) Wednesday night at Charger Gymnasium. With the win the Chargers improve to 8-3 overall and 1-0 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Setters fall to 5-5 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
New Haven scored seven of the first eight points to take a 7-1 lead in the opening set Wednesday night. The team gradually built upon the six-point lead and midway through the first set led by 11 points (17-6). Later in the match, Sara Malmlov hammered down a kill to give the Chargers their largest lead of the opening set, 24-10. The Setters scored two more before Tia Inong ended the set with kill.
The second set was all Chargers, who were led by six continues service points by freshman Keidy Candelaria. She tallied three service aces during a 6-0 run by the Chargers with eventually gave them a 14-5 lead. UNH scored 11 of the final 15 points to seal the 25-9 victory in the second set.
The third set was played much closer. A service error early in the set gave the Setters their sixth point, bringing them within one point, 6-7. The Chargers then scored six points off the serving of Malmlov to give them a commanding 17-9 lead. The teams exchanged points down the stretch and a block by sophomore Chelsey Alpough sealed the 25-18 third-set victory for the Chargers.
New Haven hit at a .270 clip, compared to a -.122 hitting percentage by the Setters. UNH tallied 36 kills and held Pace to just 12.
Malmlov led the Chargers with 10 kills and three errors on 23 attempts (.304 hitting percentage). The junior added seven digs and three service aces in the match. Alpough handed out 29 assists and tallied four kills, six digs and four total blocks. Sophomore libero Heather Ladao grabbed a team-high 16 digs and one service ace. Candelaria finished with seven kills, four aces, nine digs and one block, while Elizabeth Akinbiyi lead the team with a .444 hitting percentage (5K, 1E, 9TA).
The Chargers return to action on Friday, September 25 when they travel to the College of St. Rose for a 7 p.m. match. On Saturday, September 26 the Chargers host the women's volleyball alumni for an alumni game at 10:30 a.m.
