Chargers Take Four Sets to Down St. Rose

(09-25-09) ALBANY, N.Y. - The University of New Haven women's volleyball team defeated the College of St. Rose 3-1 (17-25, 25-22, 25-20, 25-21) Friday night in Albany. With the win the Chargers improve to 9-3 overall and 2-0 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Golden Knights fall to 9-4 overall and 1-1 in the NE-10.

The Chargers and Golden Knights went point for point through the first 18 points. St. Rose then went on a 7-2 run to take a 16-11 lead. Another 4-0 run gave the Golden Knights a 21-14 lead later in the set. St. Rose then scored four points, and the Chargers scored three, before the Golden Knights won the opening set 25-17.

In the second game the teams played to a 6-6 tie before the Chargers took control of the set. The eventually led 14-9 and held a lead for the remainder of the set. Elizabeth Akinbiyi hammered down the Chargers 25th point as the Chargers scored the final two points to even the match at one set a piece.

New Haven took an immediate lead in the third set and back-to-back service aces by Keidy Candelaria gave the Chargers an early 6-2 lead. They held a three-point lead for the remaining third set, eventually taking the 25-20 victory.

In the final set, the Chargers found themselves down 6-5 in the beginning of the set. A 7-0 run gave them a 12-6 lead and eventually propelled them onto the set victory.

Sara Malmlov led the Chargers with 18 kills and seven errors on 44 attempts. She also grabbed 11 digs and three blocks. Candelaria tallied 14 kills and 10 digs, while Chelsey Alpough handed out 43 assists and registered 10 digs. Heather Ladao led the UNH back row with 17 digs in the four-set match.

The Chargers return to action on Tuesday, September 29 when they host Assumption College at 7 p.m. at Charger Gymnasium.
