BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The University of New Haven women’s basketball team outscored C.W. Post 35-13 in the second half, as the Chargers collected their first win of the season with a 53-43 victory over the Pioneers at the Jeanette and Edmund T. Pratt, Jr. Recreation Center. With the win, UNH improved to 1-1 on the season, while C.W. Post dropped to 1-2.
C.W. Post took control early on in this one, opening the contest with a 15-6 run through the first eight minutes. Midway through the stanza, the Pioneers increased their lead to double-digits and held on for the remainder of the frame. As the whistle sounded for halftime, the Chargers trailed by 12 points, 30-18; shooting just 25 percent from the floor.
The second half of action featured a completely different story, as the Chargers grasped control offensively and defensively. A basket from Yasmin Ithier-Vicenty capped off an 18-2 run through the first 7:58, granting New Haven a 36-32 lead. Coupled with a defense that held the Pioneers to 30 percent from the field, UNH added to the lead and never looked back.
The Chargers held C.W. Post to 13 points in the second half, outscoring the home team by 22 points. Furthermore, UNH forced 27 Pioneer turnovers and limited them to 3-of-18 (17 percent) from behind the arc in the outing.
Olivia DeMarco led the way, as she finished with a team-high 12 points on 6-of-12 shooting and hauled in eight rebounds. Nicole Pollard and Ithier-Vicenty each registered 10 points, with Pollard going 8-of-8 from the free-throw line. Dominique Stellmacher grabbed a team-high nine rebounds and poured in seven points.
The Chargers return to action on Tuesday, November 23 when they travel to Assumption College. The game will tip off at 5:30 p.m. in Worcester, Mass. Live statistics and live audio will be available from Assumption’s campus.
