Softball Splits on Opening Day

vs. Southern Indiana Box Score
vs. Wisconsin Parkside Box Score

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - On opening day of the 2010 season, the University of New Haven softball team split its doubleheader at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla. The Chargers defeated Southern Indiana University 5-1, but fell to Wisconsin-Parkside, 2-0, in the nightcap. The Chargers are now 1-1 overall after day one of the games.

Game One

The Chargers wasted no time to get their offensive prowess in tune, batting in three runs in the top of the first. Freshmen Keri Tricinelli (Brick, N.J./Monsignor Donovan) produced UNH's first hit of the season and her first collegiate hit on her very first at bat. Chelsea Harold (Oxford, Conn./Seymour ) scored on Tricinelli's single from third after being walked. Two batters later, Southern Indiana's pitcher threw an illegal pitch that allowed Trincelli to score and advance Breanne Gleason (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Central ), who was walked, to third. Gleason scored the final run of the inning off Allison Vaughn's RBI single.

The Screaming Eagles added their only run of the game in the bottom of the first. Southern Indiana scored on a single with just one out. Then with bases loaded, New Haven slinger, Gleason, got the Chargers out of the inning to back-to-back strike outs.

The Charges extended their lead to four with two runs in the second. Harold scored on another illegal pitch and then Nicole Downs (Seymour, Conn./Seymour) doubled. Trincinelli added her second hit of the day that allowed Downs to advance to third, but a fielding error from the Screaming Eagles allowed Downs to score.

Bats on for both teams remained silent for the remaining innings. Vaughn and Tricinelli led the Chargers with two hits and a RBI a piece. Gleason went the distance on the mound, allowing just one hit and one run, while striking out 12.

Game Two

In the nightcap of day one, the Chargers fell to Wisconsin-Parkside, 2-0. The Rangers added a run in the third and seventh to defeat UNH.

Harold and Amy Nepi (New Castle, Del./St. Elizabeth ) added two hits apiece for the Chargers four hits during the game.

The Chargers are back in action on Sunday for a doubleheader starting at 9 a.m. UNH will take on Minnesota State- Moorhead in the first game, followed by University of Bridgeport at 11 a.m.
