Gardland's Grand Slam Highlights UNH's Sweep on Day Two of Games

vs. Minn. State- Moorhead Box Score
vs. Bridgeport Box Score

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Courtney Garland (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow ) produced her first collegiate grand slam to help lead the University of New Haven to a 6-2 victory over the University of Bridgeport in the second game of day two at the Rebel Spring Games. In game one, the Chargers came away with a 5-4 victory over Minnesota State-Moorhead. UNH improves to 3-1 on the young season.

Game One

MSU-Moorhead was the first to get on the board with an early run in the top of first and tacked on a second run the following inning to take the 2-0 lead.

The Chargers responded with two runs in the third to tie the game at 2-2. Garland, followed by Christina Gelardi (Derby, Conn./Derby) started the inning off with singles to put runners on first and second. Chelsea Harold (Oxford, Conn./Seymour ) moved the pair up a base to put both in scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. Breanne Gleason (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Central ) capped off the sequence with a perfectly placed single to left field that allowed both Garland and Gelardi to score.

New Haven broke the stalemate in the bottom of fifth with a single run. Gleason was walked to start the inning and made her way to third from a sacrifice bunt from Allison Vaughn and throw to first for an out that allowed her to advance. With one out, Samantha Minervini singled to center, allowing Gleason to score and the Chargers to take the 3-2 lead.

UNH had a pair of securities runs the following inning that would prove to be vitally later in the game. Gelardi and Harold began the inning with a walk and a single, respectively, to get runners on first and second. Nicole Downs (Seymour, Conn./Seymour) filled the bases on an error by the second basemen to have no outs and bases loaded. Gelardi was then awarded one plate on a balk that allowed all runners to advance. Keri Tricinelli (Brick, N.J./Monsignor Donovan) capped off the inning with an RBI single that brought in Harold. The Chargers headed into the final inning with a 5-2 lead.

The Dragons decided to make the game interesting in the top of the seventh by adding two runs to bring the game within one, but Gleason managed to silence the Dragons' bats before any more damage could be done.

Gleason got the win for the Chargers, while newcomers Elise Rosanio (Broomall, Pa./Newtown Square) and Tricinelli also saw time on the mound.  Gleason also led UNH with two hits, while five other Chargers added one.

Game Two

En route to a 6-2 win over the University of Bridgeport, Garland added her first collegiate grand slam.

The Chargers will take on Shepherd University and Wayne State on Monday on the third day of the Rebel Games.
