Adelphi Breaks Baseball's Win Streak

WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven baseball team fell 5-3 Wednesday afternoon at Frank Vieira Field. The loss is the first in 12 games for the Chargers, who fall to 13-3 overall and 2-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Panthers improve to 13-5 overall and 2-1 in the NE-10.

The first three innings were scoreless for the two teams. UNH left one on base in the first and third innings, but the Panthers struck first with three runs in the top of the fourth inning. After leaving one on base in the fourth inning, the Chargers answered with three of their own runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. All three of the Chargers scored off a single to right field by Tom Rombilus (Monroe, Conn./Masuk). The junior drove in two runs on that play, while the third scored on an error.

The final runs of the game were scored in the top of the sixth inning by the Panthers. The Chargers tried to answer in the bottom half of the sixth, but left three runners on base.

Leading the Chargers with a pair of hits and two RBI's was Rombilus. Shane O'Connell also hammered two hits and scored one run. Jordan Kershaw (Seymour, Conn./Seymour) and Stephen Clout (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern) also scored runs for the Chargers. On the mound for UNH, Eric Peck (East Hampton, Conn./East Hampton) suffered the loss with 1 1/3 innings pitched. Vince Lehman (Groton, Mass./Groton-Dunstable Regional) started the game and threw five innings.

The Chargers, who had won 11 straight coming into Wednesday's game, return to action at Adelphi tomorrow afternoon. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
