Hotaling Returns to New Haven as Chargers New Men’s Basketball Coach

WEST HAVEN, Conn. - University of New Haven Director of Athletics Deborah Chin is proud to announce Ted Hotaling as the Chargers next head men’s basketball coach. Hotaling becomes the ninth head coach in program history and will begin his duties on April 1, 2010.

A former New Haven and Yale University assistant, Hotaling most recently spent five seasons as an assistant at Eastern Kentucky University. While at EKU, the Colonels enjoyed a number of record-setting seasons, including two postseason runs. Hotaling’s main responsibilities at EKU included working with the guards and coordinating the program’s recruiting efforts.

In 2007, the Colonels earned a berth to the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship tournament. EKU was selected to the College Basketball Invitational this season after amassing a 20-11 regular season record. The Colonels have been one of the best offensive teams in the country during Hotaling’s tenure as well. This season EKU ranked in the top 10 in three-point field goals made, turnovers per game and assist/turnover ratio. The Colonels also broke the Ohio Valley Conference record for three-pointers made in back-to-back seasons (2008-09 and 2009-10).

“I am honored to be named the head men’s basketball coach at the University of New Haven. I want to thank Debbie Chin for giving me the opportunity to lead the program. Throughout the entire process it was evident that this is an impressive university with great support and I am excited to start working right away,” said Hotaling Wednesday afternoon.

“For the past twelve years I have been fortunate to work with great people, coaches and players. It is their success and support that has enabled me to attain this position. The most important factor for success at the college level is getting the right people in the program. Our number one priority will be to attract quality student-athletes that can be successful on the floor and in the classroom and that will represent the University of New Haven in a first class manner,” Hotaling added.

Prior to arriving at Eastern Kentucky, Hotaling served four years as a full-time assistant at Yale University from 2001-05. He also served one season as an assistant at UNH in 2000-01. The Niverville, N.Y. native began his coaching career at Adelphi University in 1998 where he spent one season as an assistant.

“The University is very excited to welcome Ted as the new Charger men’s basketball coach,” said Director of Athletics Deborah Chin. “We believe Ted’s experience at the Division I and II levels and his New England roots will allow him to excel at New Haven and in the competitive Northeast-10 Conference.”

Hotaling earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from University at Albany in 1995 and later earned his master’s degree from Adelphi University. During his undergraduate years, Hotaling helped lead the Great Danes to an Elite Eight appearance in the 1994 NCAA Division III Tournament. After graduating from Albany he went on to play professionally in Europe for the Cardiff Phoenix Basketball Club in Cardiff, Wales, and the Plymouth Rotolok Raiders in Plymouth, England.

Hotaling and his wife, Keely Garden, have two children – Owen and Susan.
