BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. - The University of New Haven baseball team split a doubleheader at Dowling College Saturday afternoon on the opening day of the 2010 season. The Golden Lions took game one, 5-1, but the Chargers rebounded with a 3-2 victory the nightcap.
Game One
The Chargers and Golden Lions played scoreless through two and a half innings before Dowling put up all five of its runs in the bottom half of the third inning. After back-to-back walks in the Chargers' half of the fourth, the Golden Lions walked
Kyle Pettoruto (Andover, Mass./St. John's Prep ) and loaded the bases for freshman
Jack Heary (Portland, Maine/Deering). Heary also walked, scoring New Haven's only run of the seven-inning game.
Shortstop
Ryan Brockett (Guilford, Conn./Guilford ) was the only Charger to record a hit in the loss as the Dowling pitchers threw 10 strikeouts.
Chris Smith (Shelton, Conn./Emmett O'Brien Tech.) pitched five innings and gave up the five earned runs in the third, while
Eric Peck (East Hampton, Conn./East Hampton) threw the sixth inning for UNH.
Game Two
After the Chargers left three on base in the opening inning before Dowling jumped out to an early lead with a solo run in the first inning. The Golden Lions would hold onto the one-run lead all the way into the sixth inning. The Chargers then evened the score at 1-1 when
Kyle Donnelly (Oneonta, N.Y./Oneonta) hit a single down the left side to score
Tom Rombilus (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) from third. After stealing second base, Donnelly scored after Heary's next hit forced an error by the Dowling first baseman. Heary also advanced to second off the error, putting him in scoring position.
Tom Ballaro (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) then stepped to the plate and singled to center field, which drove in Heary from second base. The Golden Lions finally got the third out and went into the bottom of the sixth trailing 3-1. The Chargers then played error-free defense behind the closing pitching of
Mitch Rossi (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Central) to seal their first win of the season.
Alex Smith (Manchester, Conn./Manchester) made the start for the Chargers and tallied his first win of the season in six full innings. He threw six strikeouts and allowed only one earned run. Peck pitched another 2/3 inning, while Rossi earned the save with 2 1/3 innings and three strikeouts.
At the plate,
Cory Carr (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) and
Stephen Clout (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern) both tallied two hits, while Donnelly and Ballaro recorded RBI's.
