ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. - The University of New Haven baseball team split two games Sunday afternoon at Molloy College on Long Island. The Chargers took the opening game 5-2, but dropped the second half of the doubleheader 1-8. With the results, the Chargers move to 2-2 on the season, while the Lions move to 3-5.
Game One
In a his first start of the season,
Vince Lehman (Groton, Mass./Groton-Dunstable Regional) pitched 4 1/3 innings in the opening game, while
Kyle Befus (Northford, Conn./North Branford) threw 2/3 innings and earned his first win of 2010. Freshman
Taylor Candage (Portland, Maine/Deering) finished the game on the mound in the final four innings, earning the save.
The Chargers scored one in the opening inning, but Molloy evened the score at 1-1 in the bottom half of the inning. UNH added a run in the third and two more in the fourth, the Chargers took a 4-1 lead into the fifth inning. The Lions added one in the sixth inning, while UNH concluded the game's scoring with a single run in the seventh inning.
Kyle Donnelly (Oneonta, N.Y./Oneonta) led the UNH offense with a hit, a RBI and three runs scored.
Tom Rombilus (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) added two hits and a RBI, while
Cory Carr (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) recorded a hit and a RBI.
Game Two
After leaving a runner on base in the top of the first inning, UNH fell behind 2-0 after one inning in game two. The Chargers left another three on base before the Lions erupted with a six-run fourth inning. More runners were left on base for the Chargers in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings as Molloy took the second game of the doubleheader.
#T.J. Phelan# pitched 3 1/3 innings for UNH and allowed five earned runs. Freshman pitcher
Peter Jay (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) came into the game for the final 2 2/3 innings, holding the Lions to one hit.
David Wirkus (Orange, Conn./Fairfield Prep / St. Anselm College) started in left field for the Chargers and went 3-for-4 at the plate. Kyle Petteruto went 2-for-3, while Carr added one hit and one run scored.
New Haven opens its 2010 home schedule on Thursday, March 11 when they host Concordia (N.Y.) at Vieira Field. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
