NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven baseball team lost a pair of games Sunday afternoon at Southern Connecticut State University. The Owls won the opening game of the doubleheader 7-6 in 11 innings, while winning the nightcap 9-1. The Chargers drop to 21-9 overall and 9-6 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Owls improve to 23-7-1 overall and 14-3 in the NE-10.
Game One
The Chargers would open Sunday with two runs on one hit and one SCSU error in the top of the first inning. The Owls did not wait long to answer the Chargers, with four runs on two hits in the bottom of the first inning.
Both teams went scoreless until the Owls scored their fifth run in the bottom of the fourth inning. SCSU improved their lead to 6-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning, while the Chargers left three runners on base in the fourth and fifth innings. Three hits produced three runs in the top of the seventh inning for the Chargers, who tightened the lead to 5-6.
In the top of the eighth,
Tom Rombilus (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) drove in the tying run with a one-out single. Neither team mustered a run in over the next three innings as the game headed into extra innings.
The Chargers had a base runner in the top of the tenth and 11th innings, but left both on base. The Owls capitalized with a two-out single in the bottom of the 11th inning. They followed the single with a double and scored the walk-off run.
#T.J. Phelan# started the game on the mound for the Chargers and pitched three 1/3 innings.
Mitch Rossi (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Central) eventually suffered his first loss of the season with the final fourth innings for the Chargers. Rossi registered four strikeouts in four innings and allowed one earned run.
The UNH bats were led by three hits, two runs and one RBI from Rombilus.
Ryan Brockett (Guilford, Conn./Guilford ) added two hits and two runs, while Shane O'Connell contributed one run, one hit and one RBI.
Game Two
The Owls carried their bats into the second game of the doubleheader with three runs and four hits in the first two innings. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Southern Connecticut State took a 4-0 lead with a walk, a couple ground outs and a single.
The Chargers scored their only run in the top of the fifth inning when
Kyle Donnelly (Oneonta, N.Y./Oneonta) hit a sacrifice fly to center field. The Owls then put the game nearly out of reach for New Haven when they scored two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
The Chargers left one runner on base in the top of the seventh and two on in the top of the eighth, but could not manage to score a run. SCSU added its final two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Starting pitcher
Frank Vilacha (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) suffered the loss for the Chargers, while three other pitchers saw significant time in relief.
Freshman designated hitter
Taylor Candage (Portland, Maine/Deering) led the Chargers with two hits in the nightcap. Donnelly added one hit and one RBI.
The Chargers return to action on Wednesday, April 14 when they host the Owls in the last game of a three game series. Game time at Frank Vieira Field is set for 3:30 p.m.
