Game One - UNH 3, C.W. Post 1
Game Two - UNH 4, C.W. Post 1
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The No. 10 University of New Haven softball team picked up a pair of important wins at non-conference foe No. 18 C.W. Post on Thursday afternoon. UNH defeated the Pioneers 3-1 in game one followed by a 4-1 margin in the nightcap. The pair of wins cements New Haven’s No. 1 ranking in the east region as the Pioneers were ranked just behind the Chargers at No. 2. In the process, the Chargers extend their win streak to 22. UNH improves to 26-2 overall, while C.W. Post slips to 27-9 overall.
Game One
The Chargers narrowly defeated the Pioneers 3-1 in game one.
Breanne Gleason (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Central ) provided the offense for all three of UNH’s runs.
Following four scoreless innings for both teams, the Chargers broke the stalemate in the top of the fifth. With
Chelsea Harold (Oxford, Conn./Seymour ) on first after an infield single, Gleason dropped one over the left field fence for the 2-0 lead. This was Gleason’s fifth home run of the season.
In the bottom of the stanza the Pioneers added a run of their own. Kendall Bright connected for a solo home run over the fence in right field.
New Haven added an insurance run in sixth inning. With two on base, Gleason singled to right field, allowing
Christina Gelardi (Derby, Conn./Derby), who was on second, to score.
Gleason led the Chargers on the mound and at the plate in game one. She went 3-for-4 with three RBI and on the mound she allowed just a single hit, while striking out four.
Game Two
UNH jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the opening inning. With two outs and runners on first and second,
Meghan Walter (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore ) singled to shortstop. The Infield hit allowed Gelardi to score from second base.
The Chargers added three more in the top of the third inning. Harold started the inning off an infield single, she then swiped second the following at bat. Gelardi followed that up with a single to first base that allowed Harold to advance to third. Gelardi then stole second to prevent the force at second. With no outs the Pioneers opted to intentionally walk
Nicole Downs (Seymour, Conn./Seymour) and load the bases to create a force at all bases including home plate. However, Gleason made the Pioneers pay with a single to left that brought in Harold at third. The following at bat, Walter got on base with a fielder’s choice allowing Gelardi to score. Still with no outs, Allison Vaughn flied out to center field. Downs on third managed to cross the plate for the Chargers when the centerfielder, who caught Vaughn’s fly, made a bad throw to the catcher.
In the bottom of the third, the Pioneers tallied their one run of the game. Rogin Hardy doubled to deep left center that drove in the run.
Gelardi and Harold were both 2-for-4 with two stolen bases apiece. Walter collected two RBI and one hit.
Gleason went the distance in game two as well. She allowed the Pioneers just a single run on five hits, while striking out four.
The Chargers head to Massachusetts for a pair of conference doubleheaders. UNH will take on Bentley Saturday at noon, followed by Stonehill on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. to close out the weekend.
