Game Two Box Score - UNH 7,  Adelphi 3

WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The No. 15 ranked University of New Haven softball team extended its winning streak to 12 with a sweep of Adelphi University on Friday afternoon at the UNH softball field. The Chargers rolled the Panthers 11-2 in the first game and 7-3 in the nightcap. Pitcher Breanne Gleason (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Central ) went the distance in both games of the twinbill. UNH improves to 16-2 overall and 6-0 Northeast-10, while Adelphi sits at 9-11 overall and 1-3 in the conference.

GAME ONE
After a quite two innings to start off the game, the Charger bats came alive in the top of the third. Amy Nepi (New Castle, Del./St. Elizabeth ) led the inning off with a double to left field and Chelsea Harold (Oxford, Conn./Seymour ) followed that with an infield single. Nepi attempted to swipe home on the hit, but was called out at the plate. Christina Gelardi (Derby, Conn./Derby) continued the rally with a single to center field that brought in Harold - the Chargers first run of the game. With runners on first and second, Meghan Walter (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore ) drove one to center for the RBI single. Gleason added a single to left that brought in Nicole Downs (Seymour, Conn./Seymour), who had been walked. Courtney Garland (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow ) capped off the inning with a three-run home run. The Chargers closed out the inning with six runs on six hits.

A seventh inning hitting spree for the Chargers highlighted the final inning of the game. Downs kicked off the inning with a home run deep past the left field fence. With the help from three Panther errors, New Haven accumulated five more runs and four hits in its final at bat.

Adelphi's only answer for Gleason at the mound was two runs on five hits over the seven innings.

Each Charger that saw the plate got a hit in the UNH win with Garland accumulating a team-high two hits and three RBI.

GAME TWO
The Chargers kept the momentum rolling as they jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after the second inning. Downs brought in Gelardi off a sacrifice fly to right field in the first. In the top of the second, Gelardi collected her first collegiate home run with a two-run dinger past the fence.

New Haven added its fourth run in the fifth - a run that would prove to be important. Downs knocked in Gleason, who had tripled to deep center field.

Adelphi answered back with a run in the bottom of the stanza.

In the sixth inning and down 4-1, the Panthers mounted a comeback. With two outs, the Panthers kept the pressure on the Chargers adding two unanswered runs. With the meat of the lineup staring the Chargers in the face and the bases loaded, Gleason struck out Shay Craig looking after a long at bat.

The game went into the seventh and final inning with UNH ahead by a 4-3 margin.

New Haven sealed the win in the top of the seventh with a three runs on four hits, while the Charger defense shut the door on the game with three Adelphi flyouts.

Gleason struck out nine en route to her 14th win this season.

Gelardi and Gleason both went 3-for-4, while Gelardi, with help from her home run, tallied two RBIs.

The Chargers back in action tomorrow against NE-10 foe Pace. The Setters dropped two to Southern Connecticut on Friday. The doubleheader is slated for noon at the UNH Softball Field.
