Chargers' Win Streak Ends at Bentley

Game One - UNH 3, Bentley 5
Game Two - UNH 4, Bentley 0

WALTHAM, Mass. - No. 10 The University of New Haven softball team's 22 game win streak came to an end on Tuesday afternoon as it dropped the first game of the doubleheader at Bentley University, 5-3. The Falcons also handed the Chargers their first Northeast-10 Conference loss of 2010. The Chargers rebounded in the nightcap, shutting out the Falcons, 4-0. New Haven now sits at 27-3 overall and 15-1 in the NE-10, while Bentley is now 11-13 overall and 8-8 in the conference. 

Game One
A big first inning for the Falcons was all they need  to dish out New Haven's first NE-10 loss of the season. 

New Haven put two runs on the board in the top of the opening inning. Christina Gelardi (Derby, Conn./Derby) collected the first hit of the game with a single to third base. She then stole second, to but a runner in scoring position. Breanne Gleason (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Central ) brought Gelardi in with a single and took second on the throw to home. Meghan Walter (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore ) followed that up with a single to centerfield that allowed Gleason to swipe home. 

Bentley responded with four runs in the bottom of the stanza - the most allowed by the Chargers in a single inning this season. The Falcons put together five hits and added all four runs with two outs. The Falcons' at bat was highlighted by a three RBI triple from Lindsey Ayers. 

Bentley added its final run of the game in the bottom of the second.

UNH had several chances to add runs. In the top of the third, New Haven stranded three runners on base after getting a pair of hits. In the following inning, Chelsea Harold (Oxford, Conn./Seymour ) tripled to center field, Gelardi drove her in the following at bat to bring the Bentley lead to two at 5-3. Unforuntately that was all the Chargers could produce for the rest of the game. 

Keri Trincelli picked up the loss - her first this season. While Bentley's Tara Fogarty collected the win.

Game Two
The Chargers jumped out to an early lead with a four runs in the first two innings. UNH scored a run in the first with a sacrifice bunt from Gleason that brought in Harold from third. Harold was hit by a pitch to get on base. 

The following inning, the Chargers put together three runs on three hits. Walter kicked off the inning with a single to right field. Allison Vaughn got on base from an error and both Walter and Vaughn advanced on the throw. After two strike outs, Shannon Angehr (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue ) singled to right field, allowing Walter to score. Harold then connected for a single that drove in the final two runs. 

Gleason paced the Chargers with two hits and an RBI, while Harold added a hit and two RBIs.

Gleason pitched all seven innings, striking out 11 while allowing just one walk and two hits and three runners left on base. 

The Chargers are back in action on Wednesday for a doubleheader at Assumption. The first game is slated for 3:00 p.m.
