WORCESTER, Mass. - The University of New Haven softball team split a pair of Northeast-10 Conference game at Assumption College Wednesday afternoon. The nationally ranked No. 11 Chargers fell 5-3 in the opening game off a walk-off two-run home run, while the Chargers grabbed the second game 12-2. New Haven moves to 28-4 overall and 16-2 in the NE-10, while the Greyhounds now stand at 17-15 overall and 11-9 in conference play.
Game One
The Chargers led off with three runs in the top of the opening inning.
Chelsea Harold (Oxford, Conn./Seymour ) led off the inning with a single, while freshman
Christina Gelardi (Derby, Conn./Derby) followed with a home run to left field. Two batters later,
Nicole Downs (Seymour, Conn./Seymour) put the Chargers ahead 3-0 with a homer to left field. The three runs were all the Chargers would score in game one.
The Greyhounds were held scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning when they connected on a two-run home run and an RBI-single to tie the score at 3-3. Both teams left two runners on base in the seventh inning as they headed into extra innings. In the top of the eighth inning, the Chargers put their first two batters on base. After two outs, Amy Nepo walked and loaded the bases with two outs. Assumption then forced a pop out and stranded three UNH runners on base.
In the bottom half of the eighth, Assumption's second batters hit a single. One batter later, the Greyhounds hit their second home run of the game and walked off with a 5-3 victory.
Gelardi led the Chargers with two RBI's, while Harold added two hits. Starting pitcher
Breanne Gleason (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Central ) suffered her third loss of the season and threw five strikeouts.
Game Two
New Haven once again opened game two with runs in the top of the opening inning. Gelardi added to her game one totals with a RBI-triple to right field as the second batter. Gleason then drove in a run with a sacrifice bunt to the pitcher which scored Gelardi from third. Assumption scored one run and left the bases loaded in the bottom of the first inning, while the Chargers erupted with five runs on four hits in the top of the second inning.
Gelardi hit a two RBI-double which put UNH up 4-1. Later in the inning, Downs added another home run and rapidly put the Chargers ahead by five. The last run of the inning came on the next at bat when Gleason gave the Chargers their fourth home run of the day.
The Greyhounds added a run in the bottom of the second inning, while the Chargers took an 8-2 lead in the top of the third inning. Both teams were scoreless until UNH took a 12-2 lead with four runs in the top of the fifth inning. Three quick outs in the bottom of the fifth inning gave New Haven the early-inning victory.
Gelardi led the Chargers again with three hits, four RBI's and three runs in the second game. Gleason and Downs each added one hit, two RBI's and one run. Harold added two hits, three runs and one RBI.
Gleason won the second game on the mound for UNH. The senior hurled three strikeouts and allowed two earned runs.
The Chargers return to action tomorrow afternoon when they travel to Stonehill College. Game time in Mass. is set for 3 p.m.
