No. 11 Softball Shuts Out Franklin Pierce

Game One - UNH 8, Franklin Pierce 0
Game Two - UNH 2, Franklin Pierce 0

WEST HAVEN, Conn. - En route to two conference wins, the nationally ranked No. 11 University of New Haven softball team allowed the visiting Franklin Pierce Ravens no runs and just two hits on the day. The Chargers won 8-0 in six innings in game one with thanks to Christina Gelardi (Derby, Conn./Derby)'s walk-off triple that drove in two runs. In the nightcap, a quick game went in favor of UNH, 2-0. New Haven improves to 30-4 overall and 18-2 in the Northeast-10, while Franklin Pierce slips to 13-21 overall and 8-13 in the conference.

Game One
After a scoreless first inning for both teams, the Chargers got on the board with a run in the bottom of the second. Meghan Walter (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore ) started things off with a single to left center and advanced on a wild pitch the following at bat. Allison Vaughn brought her in with a single to deep center field. The ball nearly soared out of the park, but fell just inside the fence.

The Chargers tacked on another run the following inning. With Chelsea Harold (Oxford, Conn./Seymour ) on second after reaching on a fielder's choice and then stealing, Breanne Gleason (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Central ) collected a infield single and Harold's quick swiped home.

UNH added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth to go ahead 4-0. With two outs, Nicole Downs (Seymour, Conn./Seymour) placed one into shallow left field, the fielder bobbled the ball, allowing it to drop. With the base runners off and running on the crack of the bat, Gelardi from second and Harold from first, managed to score.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Chargers ended the game with four runs - all crossing the plate with two outs. Gabby Cruz (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore ) led the two-out rally with a single up the middle. Amy Nepi (New Castle, Del./St. Elizabeth ), who was pinch running for Walter, got around to third. Shannon Angehr (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue ) singled to bring in Nepi for the first run. Cruz then swiped home on a passed ball. The game culminated with Gelardi's walk-off triple that brought in two runs for the 8-0 win.

Gelardi paced the Chargers with three hits and three RBIs, while Cruz went 2-for-3

Gleason, from the mound, tallied the complete game with six strike outs, while allowing just two hits and two walks.

Game Two
The bats were quiet for both benches in the nightcap.

Two runs in the bottom of the first inning was all the Chargers needed to take the win 2-0. Harold led the inning off with a single to shortstop. She then stole second, followed by Gelardi being walked. Gleason dropped one into center field to load the bases. Walter got to first on a fielder's choice, when the Raven's infield opted to go for the out at home, but was to late to get Harold at home. Tricinelli also reached on a fielder's choice the following at bat when Franklin Pierce's pitcher Jessica Wiley went home for the automatic out. A bad throw by Wiley caused the catcher to drop the ball and Gelardi picked up the final run of the game.

All four hits produced in game two came from the New Haven dugout. Harold, Downs, Gleason and Garland each tallied a hit.

Gleason went the distance, picking up her 25th win of the season. The UNH slinger stuck out seven, while allowing no hits and just two walks.

Since Sunday's doubleheader with Saint Michael's has been cancelled due to rain with no makeup date announced, the Chargers next opponent will be Southern Connecticut on Tuesday. The doubleheader set for 3:00 p.m. at the UNH Softball Field will likely decide who will be No. 1 in the conference following the regular season. The Owls sit just one behind the Chargers at No. 2 with a 15-3 in-conference record.
