WORCESTER, Mass. - The University New Haven baseball team defeated Assumption College 10-3 Wednesday afternoon. With the win, New Haven improves to 29-9 overall and 17-6 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Greyhounds fall to 21-21 overall and 8-15 in conference play.
The Chargers kicked off the game with three runs on three hits in the top of the first inning. Freshman Shane O'Connell drove in the first two runs with a two-RBI double to right field. O'Connell later scored on a
Kyle Donnelly (Oneonta, N.Y./Oneonta) single to center field later in the inning. After the Greyhounds added one in the bottom of the first, UNH scored another two in the second inning. O'Connell came up big again in the second inning with another two-RBI double to right field, putting the Chargers up 5-3.
UNH piled on another two in the top of the third and another four in the top of the fourth to take a commanding 10-2 lead. The Greyhound scored their second in the bottom of the third inning off a double and pair of wild pitches.
Behind the arm of #T.J. Phelan#, the UNH defense recorded just one error in the final five innings and helped control the lead. Assumption scored its final run in the bottom of the eighth inning when they strung a double and back-to-back ground outs.
Phelan later recorded his fourth win of the season. The senior allowed two earned runs, seven hits and walked one. He also grabbed three strikeouts and just under 100 pitches thrown.
O'Connell paced the UNH bats with two hits, four RBI's and one run. Fellow freshman
Frank Peloso (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Law) added one hit and three RBI's, while
David Wirkus (Orange, Conn./Fairfield Prep / St. Anselm College) tallied two hits, one RBI and two runs scored.
The Chargers game tomorrow night at Post University has been cancelled so the team no returns to action on Friday afternoon when they host the Greyhounds at Frank Vieira Field. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
