MANCHESTER, N.H. - The University of New Haven baseball team split a doubleheader at Saint Anselm College Saturday afternoon at Sullivan Field. The Chargers move to 17-6 overall and 6-4 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Hawks now stand at 5-16 overall and 3-7 in the NE-10.
Game One
The Hawks got right on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning in the opening game Saturday. An RBI-double put St. Anselm up 1-0 early. The Hawks continued to lead 1-0 for the next five innings, before added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Chargers trailed 3-0 going into the seventh inning and
Joe Romanelli (Baldwin, N.Y./Holy Trinity) stepped to the plate with the bases loaded. The freshman put down a ground out, but managed the RBI to bring UNH within two, 3-1.
After the Chargers left one runner on base in the eighth inning, while the Hawks added two more runs to seal the win at 5-1.
Kyle Donnelly (Oneonta, N.Y./Oneonta),
Tom Ballaro (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) and
Jack Heary (Portland, Maine/Deering) were the only three to register hits for the Chargers in the game. On the mound,
Alex Smith (Manchester, Conn./Manchester) suffered his second loss of the season in six innings pitches.
Game Two
After a scoreless top of the first inning, St. Anselm went ahead 2-0 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first.
Taylor Candage (Portland, Maine/Deering) put the Chargers back in the game with a two-run home run in the top of the second inning. UNH added three more runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 5-2 lead. Freshman Shane O'Connell hit a two-RBI double to center field to put the Chargers up 4-2. Later in the inning he scored off a passed ball to put the Chargers up by three.
Each team scored a run in the sixth inning and seventh inning to push the score to 7-4.
By pitching the first five 2/3 innings,
Vince Lehman (Groton, Mass./Groton-Dunstable Regional) earned his second win of the season for the Chargers. He dished out three strikeouts and allowed just two earned runs.
Taylor Candage (Portland, Maine/Deering) came into the game and pitched two 1/3 innings in relief, while
Mitch Rossi (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Central) closed the final inning and earned his sixth save of the season.
The Chargers return to action on Monday, April 5 when they travel to Franklin Pierce University. Game time in Rindge, N.H. is set for 5 p.m.
