WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven baseball team, propelled by a walk-off double by
Kyle Pettoruto (Andover, Mass./St. John's Prep ), defeated Assumption College 5-4 in 10 innings Friday afternoon at Frank Vieira Field. With the win the Charger crack the 30-win plateau for just the second time since 1995 and the first time since 2006. UNH moves to 30-9 overall and 18-6 in the Northeast-10 Conference. Assumption falls to 22-22 overall and 10-15 in the NE-10.
Despite two scoreless innings to open Friday's game, they Greyhounds quickly took control in the third inning with a pair of runs. New Haven tried to answer in the bottom of the fourth, but left two runners on base. Assumption capitalized and scored another two in the bottom of the fifth inning off three hits.
The Chargers finally came alive with two runs off a hit and an error in the bottom of the fifth inning. Senior
Tom Ballaro (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) hit a sacrifice fly to left field with one out and scored
Tom Rombilus (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) from third base. The Greyhounds and Chargers both stranded runners on base in the sixth inning, while the Chargers retired the side in the top of the seventh.
Kyle Donnelly (Oneonta, N.Y./Oneonta) then drove in a run in the bottom of the seventh and Rombilus drove in a run in the bottom of the eighth to even the score at 4-4.
A foul out and two strikeouts in the top of the ninth inning gave the Chargers a chance for the win in the bottom of the ninth. Shane O'Connell singled to open the inning, but a double play ensued and a strikeout would bring up the tenth inning.
Assumption put two runners on base in the top of the 10th inning, but
Matt Sommo (Clinton, Conn./Morgan) threw his fourth strikeout of the game and ended the Greyhounds' run. After a foul out opened the bottom of the 10th inning,
Cory Carr (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) reached base on a fielding error. After
Frank Peloso (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Law) pinch ran for Carr, Pettoruto came through with a long double to right center and the game-winning RBI.
Pettoruto finished with one run, one hit and one RBI, while Donnelly went 3-for-4 at the plate with one RBI.
Jack Heary (Portland, Maine/Deering) added two hits, while Rombilus tallied one run, one hit and one RBI as well.
On the mound, senior
Chris Smith (Shelton, Conn./Emmett O'Brien Tech.) threw five 2/3 innings for the Chargers. He dished out three strikeouts and four earned runs. Sommo came into the game in relief in the sixth inning and pitched the final four 1/3 innings in his first win of the 2010 season. The redshirt junior collected four strikeouts and completed the shutout appearance.
With two games left in their NE-10 schedule, the Chargers stand one game behind Southern Connecticut State in the conference standings. The Chargers will travel to Stonehill College on Sunday, May 2 in their final regular season conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
