RINDGE, N.H. - The University of New Haven baseball team split a pair of games at Franklin Pierce Monday night. The Chargers fell 14-4 in the first game of the doubleheader, while they rebounded with a 1-0 victory in the nightcap. With the results the Chargers move to 18-7 overall and 7-5 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Ravens move to 18-8, 6-4 in the NE-10.
Game One
The nationally ranked No. 19 Ravens wasted no time getting on the scoreboard Monday night. Franklin Pierce scored 10 runs in the bottom of the first inning, including back-to-back home runs from the second and third batters. The Chargers managed one base runner over the next two innings, but the Ravens added two more in the bottom of the third to take a 12-0 lead.
New Haven finally got on the scoreboard in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings with one run in each inning. Franklin Pierce added two more in the bottom of the fifth, while the Chargers capped the game's scoring with another run in the eighth inning.
Taylor Candage (Portland, Maine/Deering) led the team with two RBI's, while
Joe Romanelli (Baldwin, N.Y./Holy Trinity) scored two runs.
Chris Smith (Shelton, Conn./Emmett O'Brien Tech.) suffered the loss to the Chargers.
Peter Jay (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) and
Frank Vilacha (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) came into the game in relief for the Chargers.
Game Two
#T.J. Phelan# took over the second game at Pappas Field Monday night. The senior pitcher threw seven complete innings and allowed just five hits. He collected five strikeouts and set the stage for UNH closer
Mitch Rossi (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Central), who recorded his seventh save of the season.
The Chargers one and only run of the game happened in the opening inning.
Tom Rombilus (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) opened the game with a ground rule double down the left field line. Shane O'Connell drove in the winning run in the game's second at-bat with another double down the left field line, a double which scored Rombilus from second. In the New Haven half of the fifth, sixth and ninth innings, the Chargers also left three runners on base.
The Chargers spread 11 hits throughout the game.
David Wirkus (Orange, Conn./Fairfield Prep / St. Anselm College) led the team with three hits, while Rombilus, O'Connell and
Kyle Donnelly (Oneonta, N.Y./Oneonta) each recorded two hits.
The Chargers return to action on Thursday, April 8 when they host Dominican College at Frank Vieira Field. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
