WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven baseball team defeated the visiting Dominican College 15-4 Thursday afternoon at Frank Vieira Field. With the win the Chargers improve to 20-7 overall, while Dominican falls to 11-10.
New Haven wasted no time putting runs on the board Thursday. The Chargers scored two runs in the first and second innings, before erupting with seven runs in the bottom of the third inning. UNH recorded two runs on two hits, while leaving two on base in the first inning. They added two runs on three hits in the second inning. The Chargers took a commanding 11-0 lead after seven runs on six hits in the third inning.
Through the first three innings,
Mike Aquilino (West Haven, Conn./West Haven) held Dominican scoreless with just one hit. Another three batters and three outs followed in the fourth inning as Dominican trailed 11-0 after three 1/2 innings as well.
The next runs came in the top of the sixth inning from Dominican. Dominican scored two in the sixth and added one in the top of the seventh to cut the UNH lead to 11-3. New Haven scored two more in the bottom half of the seventh and eighth to increase its lead to 15-3 after eight innings.
Dominican added one more in the top of the ninth, but
Taylor Candage (Portland, Maine/Deering) finished off Dominican on the mound.
The UNH bats were led by junior
Tom Rombilus (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) who went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate. He also scored four runs and drove in one run. Shane O'Connell went 3-for-4 with two RBI's, while
David Wirkus (Orange, Conn./Fairfield Prep / St. Anselm College) tallied two RBI's on one hit.
Aquilino won his second game of the season in five full innings. He collected four strikeouts and allowed just one hit.
All of New Haven's 21 hits were singles, while six came in the third inning.
The Chargers return to action on Saturday, April 10 when they host Southern New Hampshire University at Frank Vieira Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
