Chargers Fall 5-0 in NCAA Opener

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven baseball team fell 5-0 Thursday night in the opening round of the 2010 NCAA Division II East Region Baseball Championship tournament. With the loss, the Chargers fall to 31-14 on the season and are set to take on Southern Connecticut State University at Yale Field on Friday. Game time is set for 3 p.m.

Neither team scored in through six innings Thursday. UNH put down just two hits in the opening six innings, while the Skyhawks spread six hits through the first six. Stonehill took the lead and sealed the win in the top of the seventh inning.

The Skyhawks laced three hits combined with one UNH fielding error for five runs and three runners left on base. Stonehill hit through the complete order in the innings, while also recording three RBI's.

Behind a complete game shutout from the Skyhawks starter, Stonehill shut down the Chargers in the final three innings as well, as they held the Chargers hitless.

Tom Rombilus (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) and Shane O'Connell tallied the Chargers two hits. Vince Lehman (Groton, Mass./Groton-Dunstable Regional) started the game on the mound for the Chargers and pitched four 2/3 innings. Matt Sommo (Clinton, Conn./Morgan) pitched one 2/3 innings and suffered the loss for the Chargers. Eric Peck (East Hampton, Conn./East Hampton), Kyle Befus (Northford, Conn./North Branford) and Peter Jay (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) all made shutout appearances in the game as well.
