Game One- UNH 6, SNHU 4 (9)
Game Two- UNH 14, SNHU 3 (5)
MANCHESTER, N.H. - In the regular season finale, the University of New Haven swept Southern New Hampshire University on Sunday afternoon. The Chargers needed nine innings in game one to win 6-4, while UNH won 14-3 in five in the nightcap. The highlight of the day included a grand slam from
Nicole Downs (Seymour, Conn./Seymour) in game two.
Game One
In usual UNH fashion, the Chargers jumped out to an early lead with runs in the first inning. With two outs, Downs singled up the middle and
Breanne Gleason (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Central ) collected her first of two home runs of the day with a dinger over the fence in left center for the 2-0 lead.
The Chargers extended the lead to 3-0 the following inning. With
Keri Tricinelli (Brick, N.J./Monsignor Donovan) on second with help from a single to center field and a ground out that allowed her to advance to second,
Courtney Garland (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow ) tallied the RBI single with a ball up the middle.
The Chargers and Penmen went run-for-run in the fourth inning, keeping the Charger lead at three with the score reading 4-1.
In the bottom of the sixth, Southern New Hampshire rallied to tie the game at 4-4. A walk to lead off the inning followed by a sequence of three hits allowed the Penmen to have three runners cross the plate and even the score.
After a scoreless seventh inning, the game was forced into extra innings. The game came to an end in the ninth when Downs singled through the left side, allowing
Chelsea Harold (Oxford, Conn./Seymour ) to speed around to home from second. The following at bat, Gleason drove one down the left field line that brought in
Christina Gelardi (Derby, Conn./Derby) from third.
Ahead 6-4, the Charger defense stifled any hopes for the Penmen to have a second rally in the bottom of the stanza.
Downs tallied three hits and a RBI, while Gleason collected two hits and three RBI.
Tricinelli and Gleason shared time at the mound. Tricinelli pitched five and one-third innings collecting two strike outs and allowing six hits. Gleason closed the game with three a two-third innings. She recorded the win and struck out six, while allowing one hit in the process.
Game Two
In the nightcap, the Chargers took command of the game early and never let go en route to a 14-3 win in five innings.
The first inning was highlighted by back-to-back home runs. First Downs collected a two-run homer over the fence in left center field, followed by Gleason with the solo home run over center.
The Chargers continued to overwhelm the Penmen with four runs on three hits in the second and two runs in the fourth for the 9-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Penmen did respond with three runs in the fourth to close the lead to 9-3, however the Chargers saved the best for last.
In the fifth inning, New Haven broke open the game with five runs. With the bases loaded, Downs dropped one over the fence for the grand slam.
Downs paced the Charger offense with two home runs and seven RBI, while Gleason collected three hits and two RBI.
