Softball's Memorable Season Comes to a Close in East Super Regional Finale

WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven softball team's 2010 season came to a close on Saturday afternoon. The Chargers dropped two games to the Molloy College Lions in the NCAA Div. II East Super Regional. The first game went in favor of Molloy 2-0, while the second game was decided in eight, 1-0. The 2010 Chargers end the season as the winningest team in program history with 43, along with many other accolades throughout the season. UNH closes the season with a 43-8 record, while Molloy will head to the St. Joseph, Mo. for the eight-team NCAA Div. II Finals posting a 43-19 record.

After winning the first game of the three-game series on Friday afternoon, the Chargers needed to win just one of the two games on Saturday. However, a pitchers dual through the two games went in favor of the Lions both times. In two games the Chargers accumulated just 4 hits, while the Lions held the advantage with 10.

Game one was a scoreless pitching duel until the bottom of the sixth inning when Molloy added two to the scoreboard. It was all the Lions needed as they shut the door on the Chargers in game one.

Courtney Garland (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow ) and Shannon Angehr (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue ) produced UNH’s two hits.

From the mound, Breanne Gleason (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Central ) struck out four, while allowing five hits.

Molloy’s win forced a winners-take-all third game.

In the nightcap it was both starting pitchers from game one that went back to work on the mound, resuming the pitching duel. Breanne Gleason (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Central ) and the Lions’ Megan Butterworth both pitched a great game along with stellar catches from both respective benches to force the game into extra innings.

The Chargers made an attempt for the first run of the game in the top of the eight. Christina Gelardi (Derby, Conn./Derby) led off with a single down the left field line. Allison Vaughan (Medford, N.J./Shawnee ) laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Gelardi to second, but that is all the Chargers could produce.

In the bottom of the eighth the Lions bats came alive and they strung together two hits to bring the walk-off run home and stamp their ticket to the NCAA Div. II Finale.

The Charger season comes to an end with 42 wins – the most in program history. The 2010 squad was also the Northeast-10 Conference regular season champions.
