RINDGE, N.H. - The University of New Haven baseball team dropped its elimination game 4-0 to Merrimack College Friday afternoon in the Northeast-10 Conference Baseball Championship at Franklin Pierce University. With the loss the Chargers hopes for the NE-10 title are spoiled and the team falls to 31-13 this season, while the Warriors improve to 21-17 and advance in the winners bracket.
Ranked third in the this week's NCAA East Region Poll, the Chargers now wait to see if they are selected to the 64-team NCAA Division II Baseball Championship tournament. Selections will be announced live via webcast on Sunday, May 9 at 10 p.m. Log on to

A fairly uneventful contest Friday afternoon in Rindge, N.H. came alive in the top of the second inning with four runs on four hits. The rest of the game, neither team managed a run and the sixth seeded Warriors earned their second upset in as many games at the NE-10 Championship.
The Chargers did have an opportunity to put runs on the board, however. The Chargers strung three walks together in the bottom of the third inning and had the bases loaded with two outs. UNH also had one hit in the second and seventh innings with stranded runners on base.
The Chargers managed two hits, one from
Jordan Kershaw (Seymour, Conn./Seymour) and one from
Tom Ballaro (Shelton, Conn./Shelton). Senior starter #T.J. Phelan
suffered the loss for UNH. He pitched two innings and gave up the four runs in the second inning. Freshman (Portland, Maine/Deering)Taylor Candage# came into the game in relief and pitched five complete shutout innings, allowing five hits and striking out two.
The Chargers will wait until Sunday night to see if their postseason run will continue. The top eight teams in the east region will advance to the Regional Championship which takes place from Thursday, May 13 to Monday, May 17. Here's a look at last week's NCAA East Region Rankings.
