Top Seeded Chargers Upset in NE-10 Championship Tournament

WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven softball team fell 2-1 to Adelphi University Friday afternoon in game three of the Northeast-10 Conference Softball Championship Tournament. With the loss the Chargers fall to 38-5 on the season, while the Panthers improve to 32-22.

The Chargers will now take on American International College in game five Saturday morning at 9 a.m. in an elimination game.

New Haven scored its only run in the bottom of the fourth inning off a Meghan Walter (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore ) RBI-single to shortstop. downs had reached base as the lead off batter in the fourth on a walk. The senior stole second base and advanced to third on a Breanne Gleason (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Central ) ground out.

The Panthers game-tying and go-ahead runs came in the top of the sixth inning. Adelphi's Shay Craig opened the inning with a double to left center, while the ensuing fielder's choice left a runner on first base. Two batters later, Deandra Leo drove an RBI double to right center. An RBI single drove in the game-winning run one batter later.

Walter reached base in the bottom of the sixth inning, while Samantha Minervini (Nutley, N.J./Nutley ) gave the Chargers a base running in the seventh, but both innings the Charger stranding the tying runner.

Walter led the Chargers with two hits, while Chelsea Harold (Oxford, Conn./Seymour ) and Minervini record the only other UNH hits. Gleason pitched the complete game for the Chargers, but suffered her fourth loss of the season. She allowed just four hits and collected eight strikeouts.

Adelphi's Leighann Bell earned the victory for the Panthers. She collected four strikeouts and won her 17th win of the season.
