Chargers, Owls Play to 0-0 Draw

BOX SCORE Box Score

WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's soccer team played to a 0-0 tie Tuesday afternoon with Southern Connecticut State University at Kayo Field. With the draw, the Chargers now stand at 3-3-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Owls move to 4-1-2 overall and 2-1-2 in conference play.

The opening 45 minutes of play featured an uneventful half with very few scoring opportunities. New Haven generated five shots (three on goal) and controlled much of the possession, but could not find the back of the net. On the defensive side of the ball, the Chargers held Southern to just one shot that did not require a save from UNH goalkeeper Kim Taylor (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford). As the halftime whistle sounded, the score remained knotted up at 0-0.

The pace of play continued through most of the second half as well as neither team posed very many threats. UNH did however have two of the game’s best opportunities to score in the second half. In the 84th minute Holly Dawson (Banffshire, Scotland/The Gordon School, Huntly) made a threw pass to Monica Yanez (West Haven, Conn./West Haven) who then shot the ball and had it saved by the SCSU goalkeeper. Minutes later, with just over two minutes remaining in regulation, Lucy Francisco (Lawrence, Mass./Lawrence ) nearly put the Chargers on the board with a ball that fumbled around inside the 18-yard box for a number of touches. She connected and the ball was saved by the Owls once again.

After a gridlocked 0-0 tie at the end of regulation, the game went into overtime. Most of the two overtime periods was played in the midfield, where the team’s exchanged the ball a number of times. In the 104th minute Southern Connecticut recorded the best scoring chance with a shot from just inside the 18-yard box by Flavia Bernardes which was blocked by Taylor. The UNH offense was shutdown in the overtime periods, not recording a single shot.

In all, the Chargers tallied 10 shots, three more than Southern. The Chargers attempted three corners and were call for eight fewer fouls.

Francisco led the offense with four shots, including three on goal. Emily Buckley-Matura (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney / Saint Lawrence) and Yanez each recorded two shots.

New Haven returns to action on Tuesday, September 25 when they travel to Manchester, N.H for another Northeast-10 Conference showdown against Saint Anselm College. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
