WORCESTER, Mass. - The University of New Haven women's volleyball team defeated Assumption College 3-0 (25-17, 25-2, 25-20) Wednesday night to earn its 10th win of the 2010 season. With the win the Chargers improve to 10-1 overall and 3-0 in the Northeast-10 Conference, the Greyhounds fall to 7-13 overall and 0-4 in conference play.
In an impressive second set,
Chelsey Alpough (Torrance, Calif./South / Western New Mexico Univ. ) led the Chargers to 15 consecutive points and a 25-2 victory.
Sara Malmlov (Lindesberg, Sweden/Sheridan College) concluded the set with a kill which gave the Chargers a 2-0 advantage in the set. In the third set the teams played to a 20-20 tie before UNH rattled off five unanswered points to complete the match sweep.
Malmlov guided the Chargers with 10 kills and added 10 digs, two block assists and two service aces. Alpough dished out 26 assists to lead the team. She also had eight digs, four aces and three block assists.
Janeeka Benson (Syracuse, N.Y./Virginia State Univ. ) finished with seven kills and one error on 13 attempts (.462 hitting percentage). Benson also recorded five digs and four service aces.
Heather Ladao (West Covina, Calif./Rowland ) helped lead the Chargers with 17 digs.
New Haven returns to action on Friday, October 1 when they host Franklin Pierce University at Charger Gymnasium. Match is set for 7 p.m.
