WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven men’s basketball team snapped a six game skid on Tuesday evening, as the Chargers cruised past Northeast-10 Conference foe Southern New Hampshire by the final score of 72-51 at Charger Gymnasium. Freshman Justin Exum paced the offense with 20 points while stifling defense held the Penmen to 35 percent shooting for the game.
With the win, the Chargers improved to 4-13 overall on the season and 3-11 in conference competition. The Penmen dropped to 7-11, 3-11 in the league.
New Haven performed well on both ends of the floor, making 51 percent of its shots and holding the Penmen to just 18 field goals. Furthermore, the Chargers tossed in 13 from behind the arc at a blistering 46 percent. UNH also edged Southern New Hampshire on the glass, 35-27, and forced 13 Penmen turnovers in the contest.
Exum broke out for a game-high 20 points on 7-of-15 shooting from the floor, including five from long distance. He also added four rebounds, one assist and one steal to his stat line. Robert Jamerson put together another strong outing with a double-double (10 points and 11 rebounds), while Jeremy Williams and Mike Stys also chimed in with double-figures at 15 and 11, respectively.
Defense was the name of the game from the first whistle, as the Chargers held the Penmen to just six points at the midway mark of the first half. With the score 20-6, UNH closed the frame on a 17-11 run to capture a 37-17 advantage at halftime. Exum paced the offense in the opening 20 minutes with 11 points, while the Chargers defense held Southern New Hampshire to a dismal 27 percent shooting.
After the intermission, New Haven showed no signs of letting up. The Chargers extended the lead to as high as 29 points, allowing the squad to coast to a comfortable victory. The 51 points from the Penmen was the lowest point total allowed all season by the Chargers.
Greg DeSantis led the way for SNHU, tossing in 11 points to go along with nine rebounds. Josh Morgan-Green added nine points and Corey Boland finished with seven.
The Chargers will look to make it two in a row on Saturday, January 29 with an away game at Merrimack College. Tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m. in North Andover, Mass.
