ALBANY, N.Y. - The University of New Haven women's volleyball team swept the College of Saint Rose, 3-0 (25-16, 25-11, 25-19), Tuesday night in its 12th straight victory of the season. The Chargers improved to 12-4 overall and 7-0 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Golden Knights fell to 10-5 overall and 5-1 in conference play.
New Haven and Saint Rose, two of just three undefeated teams remaining in the NE-10 prior to the match, played close in the opening third of the first set. UNH and Saint Rose were tied 8-8 before
Keidy Candelaria (Vega Baja, Puerto Rico/Bayamon Military Academy) landed a kill to give the Chargers the lead for good. The Chargers scored 11 of the next 15 points to take a 20-13 lead. Down the stretch, Saint Rose errors and a kill from Candelaria gave UNH a 1-0 lead in the match.
The Chargers came out on fire in the second set and took an early 10-2 lead off a Golden Knights error.
Chelsey Alpough (Torrance, Calif./South / Western New Mexico Univ. ) led the team to an 11-point, 19-8, lead with a kill later in the set. Back-to-back kills from
Kristy Atufunwa (Denver, Colo./Denver East) eventually sealed a 14-point victory for UNH in the second set.
The third set was played much closer as the teams were point-for-point for half of the set. After tying the set at 14-14, Candelaria led the Chargers on a rally down the stretch of the final set. She scored the Chargers' 15th point and started an 8-3 run which put the Chargers up 23-17.
Elizabeth Akinbiyi (Miami Gardens, Fla./Chaminade-Madonna Prep.) added two kills in the final four points to lead the Chargers to a five-point victory in the winning set.
Candelaria led the team with 10 kills, while Atufunwa added seven kills.
Amber Cannady (Yonkers, N.Y./Charles E. Gorton) played well in the front row with a .500 hitting percentage (5-of-10) and four total blocks. Alpough handed out 27 assists, while also hitting .500 with five kills.
