Chargers Rally in Four Sets, Defeat UMass Lowell

LOWELL, Mass. - After dropping the first set, the University of New Haven women's volleyball team rallied to claim the next three as they defeated UMass Lowell, 3-1 on Saturday. The Chargers have now won 11 straight matches and are 11-4 overall, 6-0 in the Northeast-10 Conference. With the loss, the River Hawks drop to 9-5, 5-2.

UMass Lowell claimed a 25-21 win in set one. However, New Haven retaliated in the second set as they won, 25-17. The Chargers either trailed or tied early on until a service ace from Jamie Levine (Medfield, Mass./Medfield / Keene State College) put New Haven ahead, 10-9. From that point on it was all New Haven as they rallied off four straight points to take the set and tie the match.

Set three was competitive throughout as neither team was able to pull away at any point. The largest lead for either team was three, which New Haven held twice. Ahead just 24-23, Keidy Candelaria (Vega Baja, Puerto Rico/Bayamon Military Academy) notched one of her game-high 20 kills to put away the set and give the Chargers a 2-1 lead.

The fourth and final set was all New Haven. Tied at 4-4, the Chargers tallied seven straight points and never looked back, claiming a 25-9 win as they defeated the River Hawks, 3-1.

Candelaria recorded a double-double with 20 kills and 11 digs. Joining in her double-digit kills was Kaulana Ane (Paia, Hawai'i/Kamehameha) with 10 as she registered just one error for a .562 hitting percentage. Chelsey Alpough (Torrance, Calif./South / Western New Mexico Univ. ) dished out a game-high 47 assists while notching 10 digs and Heather Ladao (West Covina, Calif./Rowland ) led the team defensively with a game-high 15 digs.

New Haven is back in action on Tuesday, October 11 for a NE-10 road match at the College of Saint Rose. Game time is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
