WEST HAVEN, Conn. - Four members of the University of New Haven women's basketball team scored in double-digits but the Chargers dropped a non-conference game to Holy Family, 74-67 on Saturday at Charger Gymnasium. New Haven is now 0-3 while Holy Family improved to 2-1.
The Tigers started the game off strong by scoring the first nine points. They later increased their lead to 11 at the 11:36 mark but would see their lead diminish over the next couple minutes.
Trailing 18-10, the Chargers went on a 10-2 run to tie the game at the 6:30 mark. The game went back and forth throughout the remainder of the first half and with 1:33 left, freshman
Ashley LeBlanc (Methuen, Mass./Methuen) hit a lay-up on a pass from
Nikita Reddy (Germantown, Md./Germantown) to take New Haven's first lead of the game. Neither team would score before the break as the Chargers went into the locker room, ahead 31-29.
LeBlanc recorded all 11 of her points in the first half on 3-for-5 shooting and 5-for-6 from the charity stripe. she also grabbed six rebounds.
Audrey Cunningham (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley) added eight points as New Haven shot 40% (12-30) from the floor compared to the Tigers 25% (11-44).
Rykema Stone (Bronx, N.Y./Wings Academy) scored 12 seconds into the second half to put New Haven ahead four. However, they lost the lead at the 18:54 mark and never got it back. Holy Family began its run with a 9-0 streak in just over four minutes. The Tigers went up by as much as 16 points. New Haven cut the deficit to single-digits twice at 8:40 and 00:46 but the margin was too much to overcome as they fell to Holy Family, 74-67.
Anh-Dao Tran (Webster, Mass./Holy Name) led all scorers with 19 points on 7-for-18 shooting and 4-for-4 from the line. The sophomore guard led the late rally by scoring six straight points for the Chargers with under one minute and 15 seconds to play. She also dished out a game-high seven assists, grabbed six rebounds and recorded two steals.
Monica Schacker (Doylestown, Pa./Germantown Academy), LeBlanc and
Bria Moore (West Haven, Conn./Hill Regional Career) joined her in double-digits with 11, 11 and 10 respectively. Schacker was a perfect 4-for-4 from the floor and 2-for-2 from behind-the-arc. LeBlanc had a team-high seven rebounds and Moore was 2-for-3 from downtown.
