Men's Basketball Defeated by Adelphi, 66-61

WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven men's basketball team dropped a Northeast-10 Conference game, 66-61, Tuesday night to Adelphi University at Charger Gymnasium. The loss in the first of the season for the Chargers who fell to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the NE-10. The Panthers improved to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

The Chargers, who shot 50-percent from the floor and 56.3-percent from three-point territory struggled turning the ball over Tuesday night, totaling 24 giveaways. The Panthers capitalized and scored 25 points off turnovers and 17 second-chance points in the win. The Panthers shot just 34.5-percent from the floor and 32-percent from downtown. Adelphi also went a near-perfect, 20-for-21 from the free throw line, including a number of big buckets in the final two minutes.

After scoring the first basket of the game, the Chargers fell behind in the first five minutes. Adelphi jumped out to a 14-8 lead behind three opening game triples. New Haven began to chip away and eventually a Samir McDaniels (Roxbury, Mass./New Mission) jumper with 12:25 left in the opening half tied the game at 17-17. Sophomore Justin Exum (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) then put UNH up three with a long range shot, while Eric Anderson (Newark, N.J./Newark Tech) followed with a dunk to give the Chargers a 22-17 lead with 9:35 left in the first half. The Panthers would crawl back into the game and tie the score another three times in the final minutes. With just over 20-second left in the half, Adelphi's Chris Ranglin hit a three-pointer to regain the lead for the Panthers, 36-35. A failed three-point attempt in the final seconds and New Haven found itself in a one-point deficit at halftime.

Despite trailing, New Haven shot 56.5-percent from the field in the first half. Jeremy Williams (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) went 2-for-2 from three-point range and 2-for-3 at the charity stripe for a team-high eight points at halftime.

Adelphi scored the first points of the second half, off a pair of free throws just under one-minute into the half. Williams answered with his third three-pointer of the game just second later, evening the score at 38-38. The game remained very close for nearly the entire second half. The Panthers led for a majority of the half, but never took a lead larger than five pointes in the final 20-minutes. McDaniels evened the score with a free throw at the 3:39 mark, while Sean Harris (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Mount Vernon) brought the score back within one off a three-pointer in the closing seconds. Adelphi, however, ended the game by connecting on 10-straight free throws to hold on to its lead.

Williams led the Chargers with 14 total points, including 4-of-4 from downtown and 2-of-3 at the stripe. Three other Chargers added 10 points; Exum, Anderson and Harris. Anderson came one rebound away from a double-double as well.
