BOX SCORE WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven men's basketball team defeated Mercy College 72-48 Thursday night in a non-conference game at Charger Gymnasium. The Chargers improved to 6-2 overall and the Mavericks fell to 1-7 on the season.
Jeremy Williams (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) hit a pair of three-pointers in the opening 2:14 and combined with a pair of two-point baskets, the Chargers took an early 10-0 lead over the Mavericks. The Chargers' defense played tough and allowed only seven points in the first 10 minutes of the opening half. Williams again connected from long-range at the 8:10 mark to put the Chargers ahead by 19, 28-9. The Chargers would lead by as many as 21 points after a #Jeffery Adkins, Jr.# layup with 6:37 left in the first half. Down the stretch, Mercy closed the gap to 10 points, 33-23, but a 10-2 run at the end of the half put the Chargers ahead 43-25 at halftime.
The Chargers maintained a substantial lead, by as few as 17 points, throughout the entire second half. After
Eric Anderson (Newark, N.J./Newark Tech) put in a layup in the opening minute the Chargers cruised to the victory. Mercy went on a 4-0 run to cut the Chargers' lead to 17, 48-31, with 16:08 left. Over the next 10 minutes New Haven and Mercy exchanged points until Anderson made another layup with 6:09 left to give UNH a 21-point lead, 64-43. A free throw and three-pointer by
Krystian Foriest (Bronx, NY/Wings Academy ) gave the Chargers a 25-point lead, while
Cyrus James (Manchester, Conn./Howell Cheney Tech) put UNH up by 27 points, 70-43, with 3:10 left. As the bench players entered, New Haven maintained its lead down the stretch and finished with a 24-point victory.
Justin Exum (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) led all scorers with 15 points, while
Jeremy Williams (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) added 13. Nine other members of the Chargers' roster scored points, including 10 by
Krystian Foriest (Bronx, NY/Wings Academy ). On the boards, Anderson and
Samir McDaniels (Roxbury, Mass./New Mission) each led the team with six rebounds.
As a team, UNH shot 48.2-percent from the floor and held the Mavericks to 37-percent from the floor. Mercy also went 0-for-8 from downtown in the loss. New Haven was out-rebounded 37-33, but turned the ball over just 15 times, compared to 21 by the Mavericks.
New Haven will return to action on Saturday, December 10 when it travels to Southern Connecticut State University for a Northeast-10 Conference showdown. Game time at Moore Field House is set for 3:30 p.m.
