LAKE WORTH, Fla. - The University of New Haven baseball team opened its 2011 spring break schedule on Saturday with a doubleheader at Palm Beach Atlantic University. The Chargers split the doubleheader with a 6-4 defeat in the opener and a come-from-behind 9-6 victory in the nightcap. With the two results, the Chargers now stand at 5-1 on the season, while the Sailfish move to 16-8.
Game One
The Chargers opened the doubleheader Saturday with a pair of base runners. Tom Rombilus and Ryan Brockett both got into scoring position, but the Sailfish got out of the jam and kept the game tied at 0-0. Palm Beach Atlantic opened the bottom of the first with a double, but the Chargerrs got the next three outs and went into the second inning scoreless.
In the top of the second, New Haven strung three hits and one walk together to earn a trio of runs. Stephen Clout led the surge with a bases loaded single up the middle which scored two and gave the Chargers an early lead. A doubleplay and pop up added one run and ended the inning.
The bottom of the second and top of the third went scoreless as the Chargers held a 3-0 lead after two and a half innings. In the bottom of the third, Palm Beach Atlantic recorded two hits for two runs, while leaving one running on base. The full fourth inning and top of the fifth again went scoreless for both teams. New Haven left the bases loaded in the top of the fifth as one of its best opportunities to add runs to the board.
The Sailfish did just that in the bottom of the fifth, taking the lead off two hits for two runs, while leaving another three runners on base. The Chargers tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the sixth with an unearned run from freshman Brendon Buckley.
Palm Beach Atlantic would regain the lead in the bottom of the seventh off three hits and two runs. In the top of the eighth, New Haven had its best chance to even the score once again. The Chargers recorded three hits and loaded the bases before the final batter of the inning struck out. Each team retired the sides in the bottom of the eighth and the top of the ninth as the Sailfish sealed the opening game victory, 6-4.
Clout led the Chargers with two hits and two RBI's, while Buckley tallied two hits and one run. The Chargers bull pen got a lot of work in Saturday's first game as five different pitchers took the mound. Peter Jay pitched three innings and allowed two runs. Eric Peck pitched one and two-third innings and gave up the final two runs in his first loss of the season.
Game Two
A scoreless first inning, turned into a big deficit for the Chargers after the second inning. The Sailfish strung together five hits and one UHN error to take a commanding 6-0 lead after two. Both teams retired the side in the third inning, while the Chargers rebounded in the fourth inning. Catcher Shane O'Connell sparked the Chargers bats with a single to lead off the fourth. O'Connell's hit was one of six the Chargers tallied in the fourth as they scored six to even the score at 6-6. Clout led the rally with a two-run triple to right center midway through the inning.
Three innings later, with the score still tied at 6-6, the Chargers began a rally in the top of the seventh inning. With two outs and two on base, freshman Chris DeMorais hammered a long ball over the right field fence for give the Chargers a 9-6 lead. Mitch Rossi then took the mound for the Chargers and closed the game with two strikeouts and a line out as the Chargers completed the doubleheader split.
Alex Smith pitched four and one-third innings for the Chargers and struckout four. Taylor Candage then entered the game and pitched one and two-third innings. Candage earned the late victory, while Rossi recorded his third save of the season.
DeMorais recorded two hits with four RBI's and two runs, while O'Connell went 3-for-3 with two runs. Clout had two hits with two RBI's and one run scored.
New Haven's next game in on Monday, March 14 against Mercy College. The game will take place at Lynn University and will start at 2 p.m.
