Chargers Defeat Seton Hill and N.Y.I.T. on Day Two

MINNEOLA, Fla. - The University of New Haven softball team won a pair of games Sunday at the NTC Spring Games. The Chargers defeated Seton Hill University for the second time in as many days, 4-3 after a walk-off homerun by Chelsea Harold. In its second game of the day, New Haven defeated New York Institute of Technology 8-0 in five innings.

New Haven improved to 4-0 on the season with the pair of victories.

Game One
The Chargers were the home team in the opening game and gave up a pair of run in the top of the second inning. Two hits and three UNH errors allowed the Griffins to take a two run lead. The score remained 2-0 until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Chargers put one score on the board. Chelsea Harold drove in the Chargers first run with two outs.

The game's next run came in the top of the seventh inning as Seton Hill took a 3-1 lead. After recording the third out with one left on base in the top of the seventh, the Chargers began their rally in the bottom half of the inning. Courtney Garland opened the inning with a triple, while Lucy Francisco drove in her first run of the game with a double in the next at-bat. Amy Nepi then laid down a sacrifice bunt to get Francisco to third, but the first baseman made an error and Nepi made it on base, while Francisco advanced home. Francisco tied the score at 3-3, while Chelsea Harold stepped to the plate next. The senior then hammered an in the park homerun to give the Chargers the walk off victory.

Harold led the way for UNH in the game. She tallied three hits in four at-bats with four RBI's and one run. Francisco went 1-for-2 with two runs scored and one RBI. Junior pitcher Micah Stonesifer recorded the win in relief for UNH. She pitched the final two-third innings, while Alana Wesche pitched the previous six and one-third innings with three strikeouts and no earned runs.

Game Two
The Chargers quickly got out in front of the Bears in the bottom of the first inning with two runs. They piled on another five runs in the bottom of the second inning to open a 7-0 lead. Christina Gelardi hit a grand slam in the second as part of her four RBI inning.

The third and fourth innings went scoreless for both teams as the Chargers held a 7-0 lead going into the fifth inning. After one walk to open the top of the seventh, New Haven retired the next three batters. The game concluded in the bottom of the fifth inning when Shannon Angehr drove in Amy Nepi with a double to give the Chargers a 8-0 lead. The eight-run lead gave UNH the mercy-rule victory, its second in as many days.

Gelardi went 1-for-1 with five RBI and one run scored to lead UNH. Brandy Dianno went 3-for-3 in the game with one RBI and two runs, while Angehr went 2-for-3 with two RBI's.

On the rubber, Stonesifer recorded her second victory of the day with the complete game shutout. She tossed three strikeouts and allowed just three hits.

The Chargers return to action on Monday, March 14 when they take on N.Y.I.T. in another game at 1:30 p.m. The Chargers also take on Wilmington University at 3:30 p.m. Monday afternoon.
