MINNEOLA, Fla. - The University of New Haven softball team defeated N.Y.I.T. and Wilmington University (Del.) Monday afternoon to improve to 6-0 on the season. The Chargers first victory came by a score of 5-1 as they swept the Bears in two games in two days. In New Haven's nightcap, the Chargers completed the sweep with a 2-1 victory over Wilmington.

Game One
In the first game of the day, Micah Stonesifer and Kelsey Malloy held the Bears to just one run over seven innings. Stonesifer pitched five innings, allowed no runs, scattered five hits and struck out four in her third win of the season. Malloy came on in the sixth inning and allowed just two hits, one run and struck out another.

Offensively, the Chargers’ bats came to life in the third inning. New Haven scored five runs on five hits and two errors to open a commanding lead. Christina Gelardi, Lindsey Couturier, Brooke Fisher and Lucy Francisco each registered an RBI in the frame. The Chargers collected nine hits in the game, providing more than insurance for Stonesifer and Malloy.

Game Two
Game two of the doubleheader featured a comeback win for New Haven. Trailing 1-0, heading into the top of the fifth inning, Francisco and Chelsea Harold finally sparked the Chargers offense. Francisco and Harold led off the inning with back-to-back hits and advanced to second and third after a wild throw. Francisco then came around to score on a pass ball to tie the score up at 1-1. The Chargers failed to push another run across the dish in the inning.

The Chargers held the Wildcats scoreless in the fifth and sixth, leading to the final inning of the game. Harold reached on an error and proceeded to advance to second on a ground ball to the shortstop. Gelardi stepped into the batters’ box and lined a go-ahead, RBI single to bring Harold around from second. Alana Wesche pitched a perfect seventh inning to solidify the 2-1 triumph. Wesche went the distance, allowing one run on five hits and striking out one.

The Chargers added a game to their schedule and will return to action on Tuesday against Florida Southern College. Game time in Minneola, Fla. is set for 7:30 p.m. as part of the NTC Spring Games. New Haven will then play a doubleheader against Indiana Institute of Technology and Saint Thomas Aquinas College.
