Baseball Bounces Back with Pair of Victories

LANTAN, Fla. - The University of New Haven bounced back from a tough loss Monday afternoon with a pair of victories on Tuesday. The Chargers defeated Saint Thomas Aquinas College 6-5 in their first game of the day, while completing the two-game sweep with a 13-7 win over Caldwell College in the afternoon. UNH improved to 7-2 with the two wins.

Game One
Down 5-4 heading into the final two innings, the Chargers rallied and score runs in the eighth and ninth innings to take their first game of the day. Junior Kyle Pettoruto registered the first run with a solo homerun in the top of the eighth inning. After retiring the side in the bottom of the eighth, Stephen Clout hit a single as the second batter in the ninth inning. He then stole second base and advanced to third on a passed ball. Shane O'Connell then drove in the Chargers winning run with two outs off a single.

Mitch Rossi then took the mound for the Chargers and closed out his third save of the season. He did not allow a base runner and retired the side.

Eric Peck earned the victory for UNH as a reliever. Taylor Candage started the game and allowed two earned runs, while striking out five.

A the plate, O'Connell went 4-for-4 to lead UNH. He also drove in two runs. Freshman Brendon Buckley also drove in two runs off one hit with one run scored.

Game Two
New Haven also came from behind in the second game. Trailing 6-4, UNH rattled off seven unanswered runs to win their second game of the day. In the bottom of the third inning the Chargers took a 4-2 lead, but Caldwell responded with a pair of runs to tie the score at 4-4 in the top of the fourth inning. In the top of the sixth, the Cougars added two more to take a 6-4 lead.

Sparked by a lead off triple by Tom Rombilus, the Chargers regained the lead after scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. New Haven then started to pull away in the bottom of the seventh with three runs of six hits, taking an 11-6 lead. UNH added two more in the bottom of the eighth, while holding Caldwell scoreless to secure its second win of the day.

Junior Ryan Brockett led the Chargers with four hits, four RBI's and one run. Freshman Chris DeMorais added four RBI's, three hits and two runs, while Rombulis scored four runs and tallied two hits.

A trio of UNH pitchers allowed just one earned run in the game. John Melville got the start and threw three innings. Brendon Buckley pitched another three innings and registered the win, while Henry Hirsch pitched the final three innings in the win. They combined for six strikeouts and nine hits.

The Chargers return to action on Wednesday for another two games. UNH takes on Nyack College at 10:30 a.m. followed by Mercy College at 2 p.m. Both games take place in Fort Pierce, Fla.
