Baseball Swings Past Mavericks

FORT PIERCE, Fla. - The University of New Haven baseball team defeated Mercy College 11-5 Wednesday afternoon in Florida. The Chargers improved to 8-2 on the season with the victory, while the Mavericks dropped to 4-8 with the loss.

The Chargers got their bats going early on in this one, bringing four runs across the dish in the top of the first inning. Kyle Pettoruto drove in the first two with a single and Jack Heary capped off the rally with a two-run double for a 4-0 lead. Ryan Brockett, Stephen Clout, Pettoruto and Chris DeMorais all scored in the frame.

In the second inning, each team scored one run in the stanza. Brockett collected an RBI single which pushed Clout across and Ken Post of Mercy knocked in Mike Gianzero with a single – leaving the score 5-1 in favor of New Haven after two.

Mercy posted two more runs in the fourth inning after a scoreless third frame, bringing the Mavericks to within two runs. However, the Chargers rallied again to score six runs over the next three innings of play. Ryan Brockett drove in the lone run in the sixth and Andrew Johnson recorded his third RBI of the season in the seventh inning.

In the ensuing frame, UNH broke the game open with a four-run surge, granting the Chargers an 11-4 lead. Shane O’Connell laced a double for the first two runs and DeMorais and Heary each tallied RBI singles to close the scoring column for New Haven. UNH surrendered one run in the ninth, but walked away with a comfortable 11-5 triumph.

Matt Sommo earned the decision, as the senior scattered five hits over five innings of work. He allowed three runs and struck out two of the 21 batters he faced. Peter Jay performed well in middle relief, allowing just one run on four hits over three innings. Kris Salvaggi pitched the final inning to solidify the team’s second consecutive victory.


New Haven returns to action on Thursday, March 17 when they take on Molloy College for the third time this season. The game will take place at Lynn University at 10 a.m. The Chargers swept the seaon's first two meetings from the Lions.
