Softball Splits Two in Florida

Box Score (vs. Indiana Tech)
Box Score (vs. St. Thomas Aquinas)

MINNEOLA, Fla. - The University of New Haven softball team split two games at the NTC Spring Games in Minneola, Fla. on Wednesday afternoon. The Chargers dropped their first game of the day 3-2 to Indiana Institute of Technology and rebounded with an 8-2 victory over Saint Thomas Aquinas College in their nightcap. New Haven moved to 7-2 on the season.

Game One
The first game of the day featured a quick start for the visiting Chargers. Chelsea Harold led off the first inning with a single down the left field line and then ended up on third with back-to-back stolen bases. She then came around to score on an error by the shortstop for an early 1-0 lead.

Neither team managed to score another run until the bottom of the fourth inning, when Indiana Tech mustered two runs on a homerun from Megan Groce. UNH tied the game in the top of the seventh inning on an RBI ground out from Kerry Tricinelli; however the Warriors had an answer in the last frame. Patrice Suplicki registered a game-winning RBI single through the left side for the thrilling 3-2 victory.

Alana Wesche pitched well and went the distance for the Chargers. She hurled 6.2 innings, allowed three runs on five hits and struck out five of the 24 batters she faced. Offensively, Brooke Fisher and Lindsey Couturier each finished with a pair of hits.

Game Two
In the second game, the Chargers once again raced out to a quick start - grasping a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on an RBI single from Couturier. From that point on it was all UNH, as the squad posted two runs in the third, one in the fourth and then broke the game open with four in the fifth. The eight runs were more than enough insurance for Wesche, Kelsey Malloy and Tricinelli. The trio of pitchers scattered three hits over seven innings, allowed two runs and struck out five.

Couturier led the way offensively with three hits, three RBI and a run scored. Harold and Brandy Dianno also collected multiple hits (2-for-3) and each scored a run as well. Allison Vaughan and Lucy Francisco tallied the last two hits for the Chargers.

The Chargers conclude the NTC Spring Games on Thursday with another two games against Nyack College and Philadelphia University. Game times are 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., respectively.
