Baseball Concludes Florida Trip with Tough 2-3 Loss to Merrimack

LANTANA, Fla. - The University of New Haven baseball team concluded its 2011 spring break trip Saturday afternoon with a tough 2-3 loss to Merrimack College in a non-conference battle. With the loss, New Haven dropped to 8-5 on the season, while the Warriors improved to 5-3 with the win.

The Chargers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning. UNH would hold on to the lead through the bottom of the fifth inning when the Warriors evened the score at 1-1. In the top of the sixth inning, New Haven regained the lead with a lead off double from Jack Heary and a single by Stephen Clout which put the Chargers back ahead by one. Merrimack would even the score and take the lead in the bottom of the seventh inning with a pair of runs.

New Haven managed one base runner int he eighth, but the Warriors silenced the Chargers' bats in the ninth to earn its fifth win of the season.

Jack Heary and Brendon Buckley led the Chargers with two hits and one run in three at bats each. Mitch Rossi entered the game for the final inning and 2/3's and suffered his second loss of the season. Starting pitcher Mike Aquilino threw six 1/3 innings and struck out seven, while allowing two earned runs.

New Haven returns to action on Tuesday, March 22 when they travel to Adelphi University to open its Northeast-10 Conference schedule. Game time in Garden City, N.Y. is set for 3:30 p.m.
