Chargers Hold Off Adelphi in 3-2 Win

BOX SCORE Box Score

West Haven, Conn. – A game-winning RBI double from junior Cory Carr in the bottom of the 8th inning, lifted the University of New Haven to a 3-2 victory over Adelphi University. Friday’s game was the Chargers first home game of the 2011 season at Viera Field. With the win, New Haven is now 10-5 overall and 2-0 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Panthers fell to 10-7-1 and 0-2 in conference play.

The Chargers came out swinging early. In the bottom of the first, with two outs, junior Ryan Brockett reached first on a walk. Next batter, sophomore Shane O’Connell, doubled to right field to drive in Brockett for the first run of the game. After an error by Adelphi advanced O’Connell and put junior Kyle Pettoruto on first, a single in the next-at-bat by sophomore Jack Heary put New Haven ahead 2-0 after one.

Adelphi retaliated in the top of the third to cut the deficit to one on a RBI single from Omar Velazquez. Another run in the seventh tied the game as Trevor Thorstensen crossed home plate on a single by Craig Matteo.

After being held hitless for five straight innings, New Haven managed to break the tie in the bottom half of the eighth. With one out remaining, Heary walked to put the go-ahead run on base. Carr then stepped to the plate and doubled to left center as Heary reached home and gave the Chargers a 3-2 advantage.

The one-run lead was all senior closer Mitch Rossi needed as he retired the side in the top of the ninth to give New Haven the win in its first home game of the season.

Junior Erick Peck received the win and is now 2-2. He came on the mound in a relief effort in the seventh and did not allow a run. Sophomore Taylor Candage started and threw six innings, allowing just one earned run on five hits and struck out four. Rossi recorded the save and now has five saves on the season.

New Haven returns to action tomorrow, Saturday, March 25 as they travel to UMass Lowell for a 12 p.m. contest.
