LOWELL, Mass. - The University of New Haven baseball team fell in a pair of game Saturday afternoon at UMass Lowell. UNH dropped the opener 5-1 and suffered a 7-5 loss in the nightcap. The Chargers fell to 10-7 overall and 2-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference with the two losses, while the River Hawks improved to 17-2 overall and 4-0 in the NE-10.
Game One
In the first game of the double-dip, the Chargers fell to the River Hawks by the score of 5-1. UMass Lowell got on the board first in the bottom of the third on a two RBI double by Cam Kneeland and never looked back. 
UMass Lowell would go on to score three more runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Trailing by five heading into the top of the seventh, junior Ryan Brockett tripled to right field with two outs remaining. He would cross home in the next at-bat as sophomore Shane O’Connell drove him in with a RBI groundout to second base. However the four-run lead was too much to overcome as New Haven dropped to UMass Lowell, 5-1.
Mike Aquilino suffered the loss on the mound for the Chargers. The senior hurled four 2/3 innings, while Henry Hirsch pitched in relief the remaining three 1/3 innings.
Game Two
The River Hawks took an early lead in the second game. UMass Lowell scored one run in the bottom of the first inning. Three innings later, the Chargers answered with two runs in the top of the fourth inning. David Wirkus and Brendon Buckley each recorded one RBI in the inning. 
The River Hawks were the next to score in the bottom of the fifth inning when they tied the score at 2-2. In the bottom of the sixth, UMass Lowell regained the lead off three runs and five hits. The River Hawks added two runs in the bottom of the seventh to take a commanding 7-2 lead.
The Chargers rallied with two runs in the top of the eighth inning off a two run Shane O'Connell homerun to right field. Ryan Brockett drove in the Chargers final run in the top of the ninth inning, while the River Hawks recorded their final out with a 7-5 lead.
Brockett led the Chargers with two hits in five at bats. He also recorded one RBI and two runs scored. O'Connell drove in two runs and scored one in five at bats.
On the mound, Eric Peck recorded his third loss of the season, while three others also threw in the game. Alex Smith made the start and threw five complete innings. Kris Selvaggi and John Melville pitched in relief in the game.
New Haven returns to action on Sunday, March 27 as they host Pace in a Northeast-10 Conference match-up. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
