WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven baseball team rebounded from a pair of tough losses yesterday with a 1-0 shutout victory over Pace University Sunday afternoon. With the win the Chargers improved to 11-7 overall and 3-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Setters fell to 7-9-1 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
In a game with eight total hits, the pitchers controled Sunday's game at Vieira Field. The Chargers spread seven hits throughout the game, while the Setters managaed just one hit in the nine innings. New Haven first recorded two hits in the bottom of the opening inning, but three straight outs by the Setters kept the game tied.
Freshman Pat Simone took fire in the second inning as he struck out the side in his second start of the season. The game's next scoring opportunity came in the bottom of the third inning. Tom Rombilus and Brendan Buckley opened the inning with a pair of singles to put two on base. Stephen Clout moved both into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt, but two more outs got the Setters out of the inning still tied.
In the fourth inning, New Haven retired the side before stepping to the plate again. Kyle Pettoruto opened the inning with a walk, while David Wirkus reached on a fielding error two batters later. Ken Bilodeau then stepped to the plate for the Chargers and drove in the games only run. The designated hitter drove a single up the middle and scored Pettoruto from second base. The run proved to be the game-winner.
The Setters only opportunity to answer came in the top of the sixth inning as two batter earned bases on balls. After five 1/3 innings, Simone was relieved by Eric Peck. Peck finished the inning and pitched the eighth as the Chargers kept the win alive.
Mitch Rossi entered the game for the Chargers in the eighth. He also allowed two runners on base, but got out of the inning with the save still alive. The senior finished his sixth save of the year with a pair of strikeouts in the final inning.
Rossi also earned his 30th career save at UNH Sunday afternoon. Improving the record he already holds at UNH and coming three away from grabbing the NCAA Division II record for career saves.
Bilodeau led the way for the Chargers with his RBI. Brendan Buckley tallied two hits in three at-bats, while four others recorded a hit in the win.
The Chargers' next game is on Wednesday, March 30 when they travel to Pleasantville, N.Y. to take on the Setters in their second meeting of the season. First pitch it set for 3:30 p.m.
