Chargers Pull Off 7-3 Victory at Pace

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. - The University of New Haven baseball team scored all seven of its runs in the ninth inning to pull off a 7-3 victory over Pace University on Wednesday afternoon. The Chargers improved to 13-7 overall and 4-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference with the win, while the Setters fell to 7-11-1 overall and 1-3 in conference play.

Both teams were held scoreless through the first three innings Wednesday afternoon. The Setters were first to get on the board in the bottom of the fourth with two runs off two hits and one error. Pace added another one run off three hits in the bottom of the seventh as Pace's MacKenzie King continued to shutout the Charger bats.

In the top of the eighth, New Haven put two runners in scoring position and forced the Setters to look to a reliever to close out the ninth inning. The Chargers rallied in the ninth by coming alive with five hits. Stephen Clout began the rally with a single to open the inning, while Shane O'Connell walked the bases loaded two batters later. Kyle Pettoruto also walked as the Chargers got their first run on the board. David Wirkus and Cory Carr each recorded two-RBI singles in the inning as a total of seven runs scored for the Chargers.

Mitch Rossi entered the game in the final inning and completed the ninth-inning comeback for the Chargers. Taylor Candage pitched six 1/3 innings in the start for the Chargers, while Eric Peck earned the victory in relief.

Clout registered three hits, one run and one RBI in five at-bats. Wirkus went 2-for-4 with two RBI's and one run, while Brockett tallied one run, one RBI and one hit.

New Haven returns to action on Saturday, April 2 when they host Saint Anselm College in a doubleheader at Frank Vieira Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
