Yellow Jackets Hand Baseball 4-1 Loss

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The University of New Haven baseball team fell 1-4 Sunday afternoon at American International College. With the loss, the Chargers fell to 18-13 overall and 7-8 in the Northeast-10 Conference. AIC improved to 11-18 overall and 5-10 in conference play.

The Chargers managed just four hits in Sunday's game. A game which featured complete game appearances from both starting pitchers. The game opened with 10 straight outs before the Yellow Jackets recorded the game's first hit in the bottom of the second inning. They combined a double and a single to score the game's first run as well.

AIC retired the side in the top of the third inning and added another run in the bottom half of the third. The Yellow Jackets took a 2-0 lead off a two-out homerun in the third.

David Wirkus opened the fourth inning with a walk for the Chargers, their second base runner of the game. He was later caught stealing as the Yellow Jackets continued to shutout the Chargers.

UNH held the Yellow Jackets scoreless through the fourth and fifth innings, while leaving one runner on base in the fifth and sixth innings. AIC scored its third run in the bottom of the sixth inning off a pair of hits.

New Haven would score its only run in the top of the seventh inning. Brendon Buckley hit a two-out double to center field, followed by a RBI single from Andrew Johnson through the right side.

The final six UNH batters were retired by the Yellow Jackets, while they added on more security run in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Alex Smith pitched the complete game on the mound for the Chargers. The senior allowed seven hits and three earned runs, while striking out nine batters.

Brendon Buckley led the UNH bats with two hits in three at-bats. The freshman also scored the Chargers only run of the game.

New Haven will return to action on Wednesday, April 20 when they host the Yellow Jackets at Frank Vieira Field. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
