Baseball Splits Doubleheader with St. Anselm

WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven baseball team split a pair of Northeast-10 Conference games against Saint Anselm College Saturday afternoon. The Chargers dropped the opener by a score of 1-0, while rebounding with a 4-3 victory in the nightcap. The Chargers moved to 13-8 overall and 5-3 in the NE-10 with the split, while the Hawks now stand at 10-11 overall and 2-4 in conference play.

Game One
Each team stranded 11 runners on base in the opening game of Saturday's doubleheader. The game's one and only run came in the top of the fifth inning from the Hawks. After a lead off double, three straight batters were walked to score the game's only run.

The Chargers threatened in two of the final three innings as well. In the bottom of the sicthing, the Chargers loaded the bases with two outs, but could not manage a run. The bases were once again loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning, while two runners were stranded in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Sophomore catcher led the Chargers with two hits in four at bats. Three others also recorded hits in the game. Starting pitcher Mike Aquilino suffered the loss, but threw five innings. He allowed hour hits, while grabbing two strikeouts and one earned run.

Game Two
After failing to record a run in the opener, the Chargers wasted no time in the second game of the day. David Wirkus led off the game with a lay down single just in front of the catcher. After Stephen Clout moved Wirkus to second, Ryan Brockett in a double down the left field line to give the Chargers and early 1-0 lead.

Behind the shutdown pitching from freshman Pat Simone, the Chargers held the Hawks scoreless through the first six innings. The Chargers would improve their lead to two in the bottom of the fourth inning. Wirkus drove in the second run with a single through the right side as Jack Heary scored from second base.

The games next run came in the top of the seventh inning as the Hawks broke through with one run off two hits and one UNH error. St. Anselm would then gain the lead for the first time in the nightcap in the top of the eighth inning. The Hawks singled with two outs and then drove a home run over the fence in left center to take a one-run lead.

Down 3-2, the Chargers rallied in the bottom of the eighth. Kyle Pettoruto sparked the rally with a lead off triple to right field. First baseman Taylor Candage then drove a single down the right field line to tie the game at 3-3. One single and one walk later, Stephen Clout stepped to the plate with the base loaded and one out. The sophomore drove a sacrifice fly to left field and scored the Chargers' winning run. Three ground outs in the top of the ninth sealed the game for the Chargers.

Throughout the game, the Chargers stranded another 12 runners on base. Brockett and Heary led the team with three hits in four at-bats, while Brockett drove in one and Heary scored one. Wirkus went 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run.

Simone pitched six innings in which he allowed no earned runs and strikeout a season-high 10 batters. After 2/3 innings from Peter Jay, Mitch Rossi took the mound for UNH in the top of the seventh inning. He gave up the save in the eighth inning, but worked his way out of the jam and earned his first win of the 2011 season with two 1/3 innings of work. The senior fanned four and allowed two hits.

New Haven will return to action tomorrow, Sunday, April 3 in a non-conference doubleheader against Saint Michael's College at Frank Vieira Field. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
