WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Starting pitchers Alana Wesche and Micah Stonesifer propelled the University of New Haven softball team to a two-game sweep of Assumption College on Wednesday afternoon, as the Chargers defeated the Greyhounds, 4-1 and 9-1, at the UNH Softball Field. Wesche and Stonesifer collected their 10th and 11th wins of the season.

New Haven improved to 23-12 on the season and 13-7 in the Northeast-10 Conference. Assumption dropped to 20-15, 14-8 in the league.

Game One
The Chargers jumped out to an early lead in game one of the doubleheader. Brooke Fisher drove in the game’s first run in the second inning with an RBI single to bring Lindsey Couturior around from second base. The run batted in marked the 10th of Fisher’s season and granted the Chargers a 1-0 lead.

New Haven’s bats came back to life in the fifth inning of action, when the Chargers boasted three runs on three hits. Christina Gelardi pushed the frame’s first run across on a fielders’ choice, Couturior drove in the next run with an RBI ground out and Gelardi then came around to score on a wild pitch. Assumption would get one run back in the next inning, but the three run cushion was more than enough for Wesche and Stonesifer.

Wesche threw five innings, scattered two hits, allowed just one run and struck out four in the triumph. Stonesifer tossed the final two frames and recorded her second save of the season.

Game Two
The nightcap of the twinbill featured an offensive outburst from the hosting Chargers. New Haven scored in every inning but one and enforced the mercy rule in the bottom of the sixth on a walk-off homerun by Gelardi. The Chargers scored one run in the first, two in the second, two more in the fourth, one in the fifth and capped off the victory with three in the sixth.

UNH recorded 12 hits in 26 at-bats in the game. Gelardi went 4-for-4 with five RBI and one run scored, Chelsea Harold finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored and Courtney Garland chimed in with two hits and an RBI. Fisher added two RBI on her first homerun of the season and Shannon Angehr crossed the plate twice in the game.

Keri Tricinelli started in the circle for the Chargers and went 2.1 innings, scattered four hits and struck out one batter in the appearance. Stonesifer relieved Tricinelli in the third inning, tossed 3.2 innings, allowed four hits and struck out four in the triumph.

The Chargers will hit the road for a string of four straight games away from home. On Friday, April 22, UNH heads up to Rindge, N.H. for a conference showdown against Franklin Pierce. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
