WATERBURY, Conn. - The University of New Haven baseball team defeated Post University 7-2 Thursday night in a non-conference game in Waterbury. With the win, the Chargers improved to 19-14 overall while the Eagles fell to 21-12 on the season.
With a lead off triple from Stephen Clout, the Chargers wasted no time getting started on Thursday night. Clout made his way to third off a triple to center, while back-to-back strikeouts brought Shane O'Connell to the plate with two outs. The sophomore singled to left field and gave the Chargers a quick 1-0 lead. After O'Connell stole second base, Jack Heary gave the Chargers a 2-0 lead with a RBI-single to center field as well.
The Eagles answered in the bottom of the first inning by scoring one run off three hits, all after back-to-back outs opened the inning. The Eagles would leave three runners on base in the first inning as well.
Post retired the side in the top of the second and used an error, walk and hit by pitch to load the bases in the bottom of the second. Starting pitcher John Melville then struckout the final batter of the inning to strand another three on base for the Eagles.
The game was held at 2-1 until the top of the sixth inning when the Chargers came alive. UNH used one hit, one error and great base running to score three runs in the sixth. A David Wirkus single to right field drove in two runs, while Andrew Johnson also scored on the play.
Post once again answered in the bottom of the sixth with one run off two hits and one error.
The Chargers added to their lead in the top of the seventh. After earning first base on balls, Ryan Brockett stole second and brought O'Connell to the plate with two outs. The catcher drove in his Brockett and gave UNH a 6-2 lead. O'Connell later scored off an error by the third baseman.
Both teams remained scoreless through the final two innings as the Chargers sealed their 19th win of the season.
O'Connell led the Chargers with some impressive numbers in the game. He went 3-for-4 at the dish, drove in two runs and scored another three runs. Jack Heary went 1-for-2 with three walks, one RBI and one run.
The Chargers used four different pitchers in the game. Freshman Kris Salvaggi earned the win as the first reliever. He struck out four in two innings of work and did not allow a hit.
New Haven will return to action on Saturday, April 23 when it travels to Bentley University. The Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader in Waltham, Mass. is set to start at 12 p.m.
