RINDGE, N.H. - The University of New Haven softball team split two games at Franklin Pierce University Friday afternoon. The Chargers dropped the opener 4-5, but rebounded with a 6-1 victory in the nightcap. UNH moved to 24-13 overall and 14-8 in the Northeast-10 Conference with the split. The Ravens now stand at 10-24, 8-14 in the NE-10.
Game One
The Chargers score immediately in the top of the first inning of the opener. Christina Gelardi and Lindsey Couturier both drove in runs to give UNH an early 2-0 lead. New Haven's lead was short lived as Franklin Pierce scored three runs off four hits in the bottom of the first, taking a 3-2 lead. The Ravens scored another two in the bottom of the second inning to take 5-2 lead.
New Haven cut the Ravens' lead back to two runs when Couturier drove in another run in the top of the fifth inning. Neither team scored in the sixth inning as the Chargers stepped to the plate in the top of the seventh inning trailing 5-3.
After reaching base off a single, Chelsea Harold advanced to third on a Gelardi double in the top of the seventh. Couturier then hit a ground out and drove in her third run of the game. With Gelardi, the tying run, on third base, Brooke Fisher grounded out and the Chargers hope of a late rally fell short.
Micah Stonesifer pitched four 2/3 innings in relief, while Alana Wesche suffered the loss in the first one 1/3 innings. Stonesifer struck out six and did not allow a run in the final innings.
Game Two
Much like the opening game, the Chargers got right on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning. Harold scored the Chargers first run.
UNH continued to lead 1-0 heading into the third inning. Shannon Angehr walked with one out and then Gelardi hit a double to put two runners in scoring position with one out. After a ground out, Fisher drove in a pair of runs with a single to center field. Franklin Pierce would score its one and only run in the bottom of the third off three hits.
The fourth inning was scoreless for both teams as well. Angehr and Fisher then put the Chargers ahead 5-1 in the top of the fifth inning as they each scored off homeruns. Franklin Pierce put two runners on base in the final three innings, but the Chargers stayed ahead and added one in the top of the sixth to take the game by a final score of 6-1.
Stonesifer pitched the complete game for UNH on the rubber. She struck out one, allowed one earned run and five hits. The Chargers bats were led by Fisher who went 3-for-4 with three RBI's and one run scored. Angehr scored two and drove in one run.
